Because it's getting hard to keep track of all the places where you're not allowed to smoke, the city council of Calabasas, Calif., decided to start over from scratch and make things simple. "Smoking is prohibited everywhere in the city," says a Calabasas ordinance that takes effect on March 17, "except as otherwise provided." The exceptions are private residences, up to 20 percent of hotel rooms, "smokers' outposts" in shopping-center parking lots, and "any outdoor area in which no nonsmoker is present and... it is not reasonable to expect another person to arrive." The smoke-free areas, a k a "everywhere else," include sidewalks, streets, bus stops, parks, the outdoor seating of bars and restaurants, and apartment balconies near common areas such as pools or laundry rooms.

That title is unfair to the Cossacks. They were for freedom and opposed to bolshevik tyranny.

Apparently this means that one could not enjoy a fine cigar on one's own front porch or backyard least some neighbor be offended. I suppose that even private residences would be smoke free if business were conducted there...will the anti-smoking jihadists now be tracking E-Bay records? What I do in my house, my property and my business is none of the government's business.

I really don't think so. They only gave limited necessary rights against actions of the federal government to make its citizens "self-governing." The duly elected individuals legally passed the legislation. The process was never designed to protect its citizens from stupid laws. It must give them the ability to throw them out of office in the next election, however.

It's still surprising to me that there are enough people in Calabasas that will put up with this stuff. These are not all average Joe's, so to speak. Lots of high rollers who, I would guess, are not used to putting up with stuff they don't like.

So if you're puffing on your cigar and a non-smoker walks by - what happens? You get sent to the concentration camp?

So much for individual sovereignty in this fascist hellhole. Some areas of California should be considered hostile Marxist territory and treated accordingly.
