Kahalailani Kanos and Kalina Jones study a collage of pictures of flood victims during Sunday's memorial service.

PRINCEVILLE — Tears were shed and hugs were given and received Sunday at a service to remember the seven who were spirited away in last week's dam break on the North Shore.

Friends of Daniel Arroyo and Christina "Sunny" Macness, — who were to be married on Saturday — gathered at a church in Princeville.

Millicent Cummings of Kilauea arranged the nondenominational get-together at the Church of the Pacific. She pointed out that it was an informal way for friends to come together as a family to heal and to hear music.

"A lot of us are close to the people who passed away, and we are all suffering," she said.

She noted that the get-together was an opportunity for people to talk story, and to get whatever they needed to say off their chests.

About 200 people were at the casual gathering...

Thomas Day of Kilauea was at the church with his family to show solidarity with the community.

Born and raised on Oahu.

Hawaii to me is the most beautiful place on earth. A few places I've been come close, but Hawaii to me will always be #1.

But once and awhile, the place can display some of the most extreme, unpredictable weather. You are constantly reminded being there about how humans don't control nature, but nature controls you. Teaches you a lot about respecting all of what god creates and never taking things for granted.

My prayers are with those on the islands who have been affected by this.

Hawaii is very pretty.

Like most places, you have to watch out for all of its teeth...not just sharks and hurricanes.

We have friends there, so wish them all well.

Hawaii has had an entire month of almost non-stop rain. Houses have been washed out. Tons of destroyed property.

Have we heard them screaming about how its all Bush's fault?

Have we heard them blaming FEMA?

Have we heard about how the government isn't helping more?

Have we had the MSM saying its anarchy in the streets?

Did they have to declare martial law?

Was their looting?

Have we had people demanding 2000 dollar credit cards?

Did Hawaiian activists come out and say this is a conspiracy against poor and hawaiian people?

We own two vacation homes on Anini Beach lagoon about 4 miles beyond where the flooding occurred. We were not there but from talking to our guests and our assistants who live nearby, the North Shore is generally fine and actually suffered less flooding than the Poipu area save for the dam failing. The worst impact was being shutoff from Lihue for about 36 hours and the draw down on food inventory at the Foodland market in Princeville that was fortunately relieved just in time by restoration of the Kuhio highway one-lane. Bottom line, it rained tremendously (e.g., Hanalei got 17 inches in 24 hours during one day earlier this month)but other than the dam tragedy and the travel impact for about two months by the partial road closure the North Shore is okay.</p>

How did the bridges to Haena from Hanalei hold up ?

Anini Beach is very nice for kids and families. It is good to hear that there were no problems.

Is the Polo field still being used ?

Some answers for you:

Some of the bridges were closed during the heaviest rains, but are OK. The Hanalei bridge was renovated several years ago, but is not rated for standard highway loading.

The polo field is still used - I think the season starts in May or June, with matches every Sunday. Anini is a very nice beach - preferred by many of the homeless or those living out of their cars.
