FULL-strength beer has been banned from the Commonwealth Games boxing venue in a bid to curb rowdy spectators.
Games organisers described the move as "proactive" while Victoria Police chief Christine Nixon said she did not have figures at hand on how many people had been ejected for drunken behaviour.
But both confirmed the heavy beer had been scrapped in favour of light ale.
"We had concerns about the venue and about the people who are visiting and coming along to the events and, so, we had discussions with management of the venue around the heavy beer," Mrs Nixon said.
She said venue management and some boxers had concerns about the rowdiness of the ringside crowds.
"We just wanted to make sure we got in front of it before it got out of hand," she said.
Police also had concerns with the consumption of full-strength beer at the rugby sevens tournament at Telstra Dome that finished at the weekend.
Heavy beer? What, does it have an extra deuterium atom?
I see more research is needed.
Just don't put me on the centrifuge again.
