ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) - Arizona authorities have brought drug charges against a couple who were rescued with four family members from their snowbound motor home in Oregon this week.
Warrants were issued in Snowflake, Ariz., for Elbert and Becky Higginbotham on Wednesday, a day after they were found in the mountains.
The couple were charged with possession of dangerous drugs for sale _ methamphetamine _ and possession of drug paraphernalia. Elbert Higginbotham is also wanted on a charge of misconduct involving weapons.
The Ashland Daily Tidings newspaper said the warrants were issued after Arizona authorities saw TV coverage of the rescue.
In an interview in Friday's newspaper, Elbert Higginbotham acknowledged he had been arrested on drug charges in Arizona, where the couple live, but said the drugs were not his. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.
The family _ the two Higginbothams, Becky Higginbotham's son Peter Stivers, his wife and their two children _ had set out from Ashland in the motor home on March 4. They were found stranded on a back road on Tuesday.
Higginbotham said he would contact Arizona authorities about the charges. "I've got to call them and take care of business. We don't run from things," he said.
Deputy Cmdr. Kelly Clark of the Navajo County Sheriff's Department told the newspaper that the Higginbothams were arrested last year but were not charged at the time because they agreed to cooperate with investigators.
"We let them go because they expressed an interest in working with law enforcement," Clark said. "We haven't seen hide nor hair of him since."
Mel Bowers, prosecutor in Navajo County, said investigators do not believe the Higginbothams were trying to flee Arizona authorities.
Police in Ashland said Friday they had not been contacted by Arizona authorities about the warrant and had no reason to arrest the couple.
The couple's whereabouts were not immediately clear. Stivers' mother-in-law, Rose Hill, said Friday the family had not heard from the Higginbothams since Thursday afternoon.
Authorities and Elbert Higginbotham said he was house-sitting for a friend in Heber, Ariz., when police raided the home. Higginbotham said he knew drugs were in the home.
But he said: "We weren't dealing in any way shape or form. We told the cops who were doing it, and now they are making it out like we did it."
DoH !
Took them 17 days to smoke all the evidence...
Lets not be so quick to demonize these guys, it could have happened exactley like he said. I loaned my car to a friend once that was in need. 6 Months later while doing a thorough cleaning I found a bag of dope. Had I been stopped and dogs brought in I am sure I would have been charged and prosecuted.
Nice tagline...
Ha......once I borrowed a bag from my then boyfriend.....flew to my destination and found a small film container in it....with.....marijuana......needless to say, I was pissed......relationship didn't last long after that.
"Elbert Higginbotham".... Sounds like the name of a garden gnome.
The question is, is, why did AZ wait to see the article on TV to file an arrest warrant.
Why Thank You!
Seems to happen to him a lot!

Doesn't sound like anyone is in a big rush here.
One time this friend of mine gave me this big bag of what he said was oregeno and asked me to drive it out to a friend of his who was gonna be in this cooking contest. Amazingly, when I dropped off the bag, the guy had all these plants in his house which, oddly enough, he claimed were oregeno plants. They sure did like oregeno.
Isn't he that guy who sings in Vegas???
It's not unusual to be loved by anyone.....
Oh, never mind, that's Engelbert Humperdinck.
They should have been into coke, what with all the snow references! LOL .....
This explains a lot.
methamphetamine....that explains a few things.
Uhm, no, that would be somebody like...
Arizona is just about the worst state when it comes to minor drug offenses. It can be worse than the most violent of crimes when it comes to time in the pokey.
Like how they lasted two weeks with almost no food. "Duh, we just forgot to eat."
Bet the RV walls have bounce marks on them, though.
