California Republicans propose crackdown on illegal immigration

SACRAMENTO - Frustrated by the federal government's inability to stop the flow of illegal immigration, the state's Republican lawmakers are attempting to put the squeeze on millions of undocumented workers, students and parents in ways unseen since the movement that led to Proposition 187 more than a decade ago.

Assembly and Senate Republicans have proposed 25 measures this legislative session that would restrict illegal immigrants' access to college, block state-funded benefits and encourage police officers to act as immigration agents.

Some of the measures will be vetted at committee hearings in the coming weeks and it's almost certain that most will be blocked by the Democrat majority. But supporters of the measures are counting on new momentum coming from the U.S. Congress, which is debating this week whether to criminalize illegal immigration, or approve amnesty for as many as 12 million undocumented people. And, even if their measures fail, Republican incumbents up for election can use fighting illegal immigration as a popular issue to rally their base in the November elections.

--snip--

Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political analyst at the University of Southern California, said the flurry of immigration legislation has a lot to do with this being an election year.

``Both sides are looking at it as an issue that can mobilize their base,'' she said. ``For the Republicans, that base is the conservative activists. For the Democrats, it's labor, Latino voters.''

--snip--

Among the first in a new batch of bills to hit legislative committees is a bill by Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, R-Temecula. His bill denies state aid to police departments whose officers don't fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities. That bill goes to the Senate Public Safety Committee on April 8.

Thanks as well and G'nite.

I had to snip the heck out of it but the article is worth a read thru for the rundown of what has been slapped down before and likely will be again, usually by the demRats or the liberal judges.

California Legislature Ping!

Too bad about the slapdown...maybe if we can generate some public support it'll change.

That bit about denying aid to police departments. Arizona just tried to do that in legislation last week, but those provisions were pulled before the bill left the committee considering it.

How the he!! are the Republican Senators trying to mobilize their base by voting for guest-amnesty? They've mobilized me to join the minutemen and start looking for a conservative party.

After what went on in those demonstrations in California the last few days, I imagine there will be more support than ever to get these people under control and out of their state.

The Republicans are a hopeless minority in the California Senate and Assembly. They will get none of these things.

"After what went on in those demonstrations in California the last few days, I imagine there will be more support than ever to get these people under control and out of their state."

the problem is that those with the power to reigh in control are for annexing Mexican citizens to fuel even greater power.

A lady on the radio today said she called the LA mayor's office to complain that the mayor was not representing her interests by welcoming illegal immigrants break laws during the protest.

She went on to explain how her family had immigrated to the US, but legally and to wait their turn to come under harsh conditions, but some never made it because they were gassed.

She said the lady at the mayors office on the other end of the phone began to laugh, she asked what for, and the lady said "because i am one of them" and then the mayors office just hung up.

This one sure caught my eye on the Mercury fishwrap, of all papers.

Agreed, the history and track record of state GOP achievements in this area is not good. In the past, what voters and dems didn't deep six, the courts finished off.

One legislative illegal immigration countermeasure I'd like to see in California is to throw out the California income tax on individuals and businesses and the property tax as well. California should rely on sales tax on all goods and services for its tax revenue.

How would this affect the illegal immigrant issue ? Illegal immigrants don't pay income taxes, but if all goods and services -- including milk, medicine, and services -- included the same sales tax percentage we now pay in California, then finally the illegal aliens would be contributing. Extending the California sales tax to 10% of ALL purchases would more than offset the lost income and property taxes.

Including a refund of sales taxes to legal residents, but not illegals, would make it MORE expensive for illegals to live in California than for citizens. This refund would be like in the FairTax plan -- no record keeping required, just a simple proof of legal residence to receive a refund of the tax amount that would have been paid on the first 'X' amount of spending. As in the FairTax plan, that level of expected spending could be set at the poverty level. A legal family of four would have their sales taxes completely refunded on the first $25K of spending. An illegal family in LA spending $50K contributes $5K because it gets no refund, but the legal family contributes only $2.5K.

These demonstrations are going to backfire in the long run, the Mexicans just don't realize it yet. They have wised up more people to the danger of themselves than they'll ever know. Congress had better think twice before they cater to them just because they can generate a huge mob. The Silent Majority (of both parties) is an even bigger mob.

Back in the 60's I had the misfortune of being stuck on the Interstate 5 freeway in Seattle, when a bunch of Hippies from the University of Washington decided to take over the freeway and march down it for 3 or 4 miles. It took HOURS, and the longer I was stuck there, the madder I got. By the time I got home, I WAS A POLITICAL ACTIVIST! That was 45 years ago, and I'm still at it. Those stupid Hippies made converts of many of us that day. Those Mexicans are doing the same thing. They're rubbing their illegality and lawlessness in everyone's face. They're advertising what "peaceful" and "Mexico-first" demanding free-loaders they are. The more obnoxious they get, the more converts they'll make.

I think that will be the case.

After seeing those images over the week-end it made me start thinking about how we avoid it in the coming years. Especially when we swear immigrants in as citizens that lie about their allegiances. I have now started posting this to try and get people to start thinking about the alternatives we have:

The times they are a changing...and so should the laws of citizenship for immigrants. Learning to speak our language should be a priority, making it easier for them to interact with people of other cultures and not stay isolated in a new country. Also, when they swear allegiance to the United States of America, it should be understood that if at anytime they have a change of heart and choose allegiance to any other nation's flag over ours, they need to pack their bags. Citizenship ends at that point. Disagreement is one thing, but what I viewed over the week-end of their signs and the burning of American flags, whether they were immigrants or criminals made my blood boil, as it did with others who viewed it. NO MORE! IT's time to change the playing field.

If this is the same Sherry Bebitch I went to graduate school with at Claremont, she's a screaming, radical, bull dyke, leftist activist.

Don't believe anything she says.
