NEW YORK (Bloomberg)- The cost of insuring ships may rise following a series of accidents in the past week, according to Marsh & McLennan Cos. and Aon Corp., the worlds largest insurance brokerages. A fire on the HYUNDAI FORTUNE may have damaged one-third of the 5,000 containers, costing insurers $100 million, shipping newspaper Lloyd's list reported.

The original report of the fire's cause was thought to be fireworks. I saw the pictures of the vessel and felt the damage was too great for fireworks. I was just informed of an urgent trasmission from Lloyd's marine Intelligence that the fireworks theory is being discounted due to the explosion being too powerful. The rear section of the ship has been almost totally destroyed and the hull almost split in two.

The vessel was 60 miles off the Yemeni Coast.

Problems of knowing exactly what was in the conatainers was expressed. Some suspicion of fraud by shippers misdeclaring consignments in order to ship "prohibited cargo"

It's more dyslexia than it is trying to self promote.

RPG's not big enough for this type of damage.

What concerns me is the Lloyds communication infering that shippers are mis describing contents so as to ship "prohibited goods".

Our MAIN port security is based on Achmed providing correct documentation of what is in the containers.

Just aft the living spaces, right?

Loss of life?

Flooding?

Photo #5 seems to show a burned container resting across the port bridge wing!

The vessel was 60 miles off the Yemeni Coast.

Let me have a "go" at guessing the cause....

Terrorists have been funding their exploits of late with piracy. This however doesn't sound like it. Fraud maybe?

Much of the cargo has originated from feeder vessels

Does that mean some boat pulls up alongside and transfers a few containers?Press Here

Container companies operate around major hub ports. Smaller container vessels (feeders)bring containers from smaller ports and drop them off at the larger port. The larger containerships pick up those containers plus the ones that may originate at the larger port.
