Alameda cops find weapons bonanza during traffic stops

ALAMEDA — Police say they removed an unusually large amount of guns, including several assault weapons, from the streets last month.

Of the 13 guns confiscated in March, many were discovered by patrol officers during routine traffic stops, Lt. David Boersma said.

"We've had a dramatic increase in weapons violations during the past month," he said.

A patrol officer making a routine traffic stop March 19 on Central Avenue discovered a Tech-9 machine pistol in the driver's waistband, Boersma said. The officer ordered the driver out of the car because he appeared fidgety and kept touching his waistband, Boersma said.

On March 26, police recovered a shotgun froma driver during a traffic stop in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue.

A couple days earlier, officers removed an AK-47 and several other weapons from a house in the 1800 block of Poggi Street while investigating a noninjury shooting that happened March 22 in the 100 block of Brush Street.

Police responding to the Brush Street call found more than a dozen shell casings from an assault rifle, but no victims.

Boersma said the AK-47 recovered March 24 on Poggi Street was used in the Brush Street shooting two days earlier.

And while investigating a burglary at Kragen Auto Parts last Wednesday, police recovered an AK-47 with a bayonet attached and a bulletproof vest from a residence in Oakland.

Five of the 13 recovered guns were prohibited assault weapons, Boersma said.

Wow, you mean criminals didn't turn in their guns immediately after Cali liberals passed their "scary gun" bans? Whoda thunk criminals don't obey gun laws?

Prohibition bump.

Connecting the War on Guns & Drugs [my title]
Address:http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/820965/posts

"-- To understand the effect of the Drug War, we must understand it for what it is: the second Prohibition in America in this Century.
I do not need to remind anyone who knows our recent history what a disaster the first Prohibition was. It is a classic example of the attempt to control a vice--drunkenness--by police power. It made all use of alcohol a case of abuse. It produced such an intense wave of violence that it gave a name--The Roaring Twenties--to an entire decade. It lead to the establishment of powerful criminal empires, to widespread corruption in police and government, and to a surge of violence and gunfire all over the land.
And it produced a powerful attack on the Bill of Rights, including the most successful campaign of gun control laws in America up to that time.

Before the first Prohibition criminalized the trade in alcohol, liquor dealers were ordinary businessmen; after 1920 they were all violent criminals fighting for their territories.
We had gang wars, and drive-by shootings, and the use of machine guns by criminals. --"

just open the doors and let 'em in
let 'em in
let 'em in
just open the doors and let 'em in
'cause that's what it means to be Amer-i-can...

and they come across our borders to work hard and provide for their families...I see. Geez, I must have been born yesterday... (dripping sarcasm)

Alameda abuts Oakland but is 95% Caucasian and Asian, separated from Oakland by a moat. At the nearest point you have to pass through a dark underwater tunnel to get in or out. That has a psychological effect keeping the cities separated. The tunnels and bridges are easily sealed off if there is a crime. The police are very assertive in pulling people over. It's amazing to have a clean quiet slow paced Mayberry town when there are people getting shot in drive-bys about a mile away.

(snip)

Of the 13 guns

Millions of criminals and they get 13 guns and call that an unusually large amount?

Right here in this small town you could get that many guns from criminals arrested each day!

Am I missing something here?

At least they weren't carrying black market cigarettes.

They were probably just getting ready for the upcoming May Day romp.

They could come to my place in gun-free Florida and find 15 firearms in my home. AND more than 5 of them are Kalifornia-prohibited. Huzzah for Florida!

Police say they removed an unusually large amount of guns, including several assault weapons, from the streets last month = 13 guns??

A patrol officer discovered a Tech-9 machine pistol in the driver's waistband,he appeared fidgety and kept touching his waistband.

Two variations are NOT 'Machine Pistols' as they do not fire full auto unless illegally converted to do so...they come in basically two lengths total length 10-12" long with 3-5 inches of barrel

No wonder the 'perp' was 'fidgety'

Just in case you want the lyrics as well:

We got a right to pick a little fight Bonanza!

If anyone fights anyone of us

He's gotta fight with me!

We're not a one to saddle up and run, Bonanza!

Anyone of us who starts a little fuss

knows he can count on me!

One for four

Four for one,

This we guarantee.

We got a right to pick a little fight Bonanza!

If anyone fights anyone of us

He's gotta fight with me!

Alameda is a city of approximately 74,000 reasonably behaved citizens, right in the heart of the liberal paradise called the SF Bay Area.

The police blotter reads like this:

Guy stopped for broken tail light. Booked for warrants. Lives in Oakland.

Nitwits on the beach making noise in the middle of the night. Sent back to Oakland.

Shoplifter busted at the supermarket. Lives in Oakland.

And etc....the crime rate in Alameda, in most categories, is up to nine times less than in surrounding cities. So 13 illegal guns in one month is pretty unusual. My hunch?

Lives in Oakland.
