Famous One-Eyed Kitten to Go on Display

GRANBY, N.Y. -- The one-eyed, noseless kitten that inspired an international debate last year over whether it was a hoax is coming to a new museum of oddities in central New York. The museum founder, who believes in creationism, said the kitten is meant to launch another debate about how science and religion intersect. Cy, short for Cyclops, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy. (AP Photo/Traci Allen) (Traci Allen - AP) The Oregon woman who owned the kitten said she turned down Ripley's Believe it or Not! and sold the remains to John Adolfi of Granby because she liked his religious reasons for wanting them. "We didn't want Cy becoming a joke or part of a personal collection," Traci Allen said. "But John was so heartfelt, you could tell he was genuine and sincere." Adolfi would not say how much he paid for the kitten, named Cy, for Cyclops. He said he plans to have it embalmed Wednesday at a local funeral home. The kitten died in December, a day after being born. Veterinarians in Oregon said it suffered from a rare disorder called holoprosencephaly. Cy will be displayed in a glass jar in the Lost World Museum, which Adolfi hopes to open in nearby Phoenix this fall. Other exhibits will include giant plants and eggs, deformed animal remains and archaeological finds, Adolfi said.

I thought this was interesting, as I remember the kitten and am familiar with Mr. Adolfi.

I'm sorry, but that looks photoshopped.

It does look photoshopped, but on the thread that came out when it was born there are links to similar photos on a veterinary medicine site.

Apparently it is a rare but not unknown birth defect. So far always lethal within the first few days.

Yep. Things will get even worse as technology becomes more developed, cheaper, and dispersed amongst the public. It will be harder and harder to prove that a photo is real or if it is the result of a some middleschool kid sitting in front of his computer for 20 minutes. There was a time that a picture was worth a thousand words, but nowadays it could also mean some person with skills at photoshop.

Moving forward I think the same will happen to video, where clips can be altered by anyone. While this happens all the time in Hollywood (that is expensive, especially when nicely done) and in some homes (although the improvements are either cosmetic, for example removing red eyes, or if meant to ape Hollywood type effects they are nonconvincing) , I believe that soon cheap capable technology will soon proliferate throughout the populace that will enable anyone with time to create/alter digital video that has 'extras' added to it. For example adding a totally realistic sasquatch to your camping video (none of that blurry 'man-in-ape-suit' stuff), or having a perfectly realistic UFO flash by, or even go fishing and snag Nessie on your marlin line (although why you would have a marlin line on Loch Ness is beyond me ...LOL). Soon it will be impossible to believe video, and the tech will get so good that unless you see it with your own 2 eyes (with no TV/Computer/other screen in front of you) you just cannot believe it.

Who knows. Maybe pictures and video will have to possess digitalized 'stamps' of 'authenticity' to be accepted as 'real.' Hey, someone wants to help start a firm authenticating future digital video give me a holler (LOL).

One thing doesn't make sense.....the kitty was born Dec. 28, 2005 and lived one day (meaning it died Dec. 29th for those in Rio Linda). Yet the article also states it will be embalmed Wednesday (presumably today judging by the date on the article) begging the question of how the owner managed to preserve it for 3 months. Hopefully not in her freezer!

Hopefully not in her freezer!

I read this story on Drudge back in late December as it happened...I'm sorry to say that's exactly what the owner said she did with the remains.

This story really got to me the first time around.

Oh, leave the pitiful little thing be. Bury it and let it molder back to dust as it should, instead of making another pickled-oddity-in-a-jar.

I thought this picture was photoshopped because no kitten born the day before even has their eyes open and clear yet.
