GOP Nears Deal on Immigration

Senate Republicans reached agreement last night on a compromise immigration measure that they believe will garner enough bipartisan support to break through a parliamentary impasse that has stymied progress on a high-stakes border security bill for two weeks.
Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years.
Those who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Republicans' great accomplishment is that they are making those illegal aliens who have been here for 2-5 years take a road trip to El Paso, after which they still get to stay here?
Boy, that'll teach them to break our laws- a trip to El Paso. Pathetic.

Any Republican in a conservative state ought not to be planning to run for office again if he votes for this bill.

The GOP strategics would laugh in your face if you told them that. They know your only other choice is a democrat who is even more in favor of illegal immigrants.
You're not one of the all-powerful SWING VOTERS like Latinos so you don't count.

if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years. If this is the real compromise, then no one has anything to worry about. No illegal alien will be able to provide "work stubs", nor any other document to prove their residency. How many illegal aliens will learn English, and how many will want to pay back taxes.
I do not like amnesty, but if this is what the bill will look like, it is dishonest. Why not be honest and say, "No, there will be no amnesty" instead of giving them a set of hurdles so high they can't jump over it?
To: Altair333
As usual (when it comes to immigration) I side with the prez on this one - looks like they've just renamed the guest worker visa - which is okay with me.
The more people the better - how else are we going to compete with China or India 50 years from now.

$2000!!? Is that all that American citizenship is worth? Can we just open it up to the highest bidders in the world, since we're going to cheapen it anyway, and actually make a few real dollars out of this...ahem...deal.
