LIFTON, Colo. -- A pit bull injured several people and two other dogs in Clifton, Colo., the Grand Junction Sentinel reported in its Thursday editions.

Three people were injured as they tried to stop the dog from attacking a baby. None of the injuries to the people were serious, but a Chihuahua that was attacked was critically injured.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon as a loose pit bull attacked the Chihuahua and a schnauzer. The pit bull bit the hand of a mother who picked up her 18-month-old child who was playing in the front yard of their home.

A second person was injured trying to pry the Chihuahua out of the mouth of the pit bull, according to the paper. The man hit the pit bull in the head a number of times in order to get it to loosen its grip on the smaller dog.

Investigators said the pit bull was owned by a neighbor who could not be contacted and it appeared to be unlicensed.

but, but, but... I have a pit bull that is very sweet... and besides, Pit Bulls are not a well defined species, there are all sorts of dogs called pit bulls that are not really pit bulls, and hey, I once knew a golden retriever that bit a kid. /sarcasm

"sue to owner" should read as sue the owner. I hate it when my brain goes on auto pilot.

I once knew of a german shepard that bit a kid... oh, wait a minute... this german shepard had a pitbull as its best friend.

No, actually, I'm somewhere in the middle on this topic.

Aaahh! The weekly pit bull horror thread. All is right with the world.

In other news, outer space aliens abandon anal probe, say they know too much already.

Pit bulls are to dogs what Islam is to organized religion.

95% of the folks I have encountered who own pit bulls tend to be the scum of the earth. If you are part of the other 5% why on earth did you purchase this contemptible breed?

How about Belgian shepherds? :-)

I got mine at a shelter, best dog ever. He appears to be mostly a type of Belgian shepherd called a Malinois...and yes, I was a bit disturbed by the 'French' name. At least until I saw the same kind of dog employed by the Secret Service as their elite bomb sniffer...but I digress,

The dog in this story needs to be put down, followed by lawusits/jail time for the owner.

Shoot the dog. Jail the owner and ban them from having any more animals.

Yay, another thread where a bunch of ignorant people can come and put the blame on a dog instead of where it belongs, on the owner.

My 870 is always ready, with a full magazine. If there's a pit bull attack on my block, there will be a dead pit bull instanter. There are three pit bulls within a couple of blocks of my home. If any of them enter my yard off-leash, it will shortly be gone.

I do not tolerate unleashed pit bulls under any circumstances. Other dogs get a brief chance to demonstrate that they are just friendly dogs, but not pit bulls.

There are small children on my street, and other pets. A loose pitbull is no different than a bomb with the fuse lit, in my opinion.

So far, I have only had to dispatch one pit bull, which was attacking a small dog on a commercial street in the town I used to live in. My office was just across the street from the attack. I didn't have my shotgun there, so I had to resort to using a baseball bat to dispatch the dog.

Sadly, the little terrier the woman was walking did not survive the attack, but the woman had only minor injuries.

The owner of the dog, a very ugly man with an uglier temperment, came from his house and attempted to threaten me. He was not armed in any way. I explained to him that his dog died because he was too stupid to keep it under control.

Then the cops came, so I returned to my office.
