As a former resident of Downtown Minneapolis(3 years just off of Hennepin Ave, 8 blocks from the IDS tower), I didn't feel unsafe for the first 2 or so years, then something amazing happened, it seemed that gangs took over the streets about 3 nights a week. And I damn sure went from resident to target. Funny how these 3 nights were associated with certain varieties of concerts taking place. Bring in a Rap act and gang bangers from all over the city descended on the place to posture and harrass. We ended up moving after we had two cops episodes occur in our front yard(literally) We had a armed robber hiding in our bushes who the cops tackled and arrested right in front of us. Then the Whore and Pimp show in the rental unit next door. Not only did we feel unsafe, the cops told us they were powerless to stop it given the current enviroment.

I swear to god folks, the police were so petrified of racial lawsuits they did nothing. Our last trip to block E entailed getting bottles hurled at us by a group of "Spirited Youths" (That's what the officer who chided us for being upset told us was happening) "Spirited Youth has effectively removed the family from a supposedly family friendly Business Structure.

Good Job folks.

The rise and acceptance of the gang culture ethos in America is the responsibility of the "liberals and their fear of hurting low class scum's "feelings".

The culture of America is increasingly low class and trashy. No rules, no standards, no correction of behaviors, no discipline.

It's only going to get worse with unlimited immigration and the rise of low class, trashy Mexican culture. Maybe America will be run by the Chinese someday. At least they make the kids go to school and learn and they're smarter than the Mexicans.

--I am astounded at this rag blaming on a culture rather than guns, concealed carry, the NRA, etc.,--

The next to last paragraph in the article makes this astonishing (for the Star Tribune) conclusion:

None of these measures, however needed, can attack the real culprit: the sad, self-destructive subculture that's especially attractive to African-American boys. It's heartbreaking to see so many of them working so hard to validate a stereotype. Orlando Patterson, the Harvard sociologist, recently scolded his fellow researchers for continuing to find excuses for why this group, almost alone, shows no upward trajectory in American life. In a courageous essay (New York Times, March 26), he rejected racism, poverty, the economy and public schools as sole causes, focusing instead on a hip-hop culture that celebrates nihilistic behavior. What other youth see as entertainment, black youth sees as life, he said. Ironically, the pride and self-respect gained by being "bad" turns out to be the very thing that most prevents success.

This realization is becoming more and more evident, even to Liberals. Better late than never, I say. Once the black community stops resisting the idea that they are self-destructing and not the victims of intractible, institutional racism, only then will they be able to claim the "respect" their youth claim to desire. It will happen, there are plenty of people within the black community who already see this. They just have to overcome the Jesse Jackson's, Al Sharpton's and Louis Farrakahn's of the world. Then, and only then, will they be truly free.
