The Senate reached an extraordinary and fragile bipartisan agreement today on a sweeping overhaul of U.S. immigration law that would grant a chance to permanent residence for illegal immigrants who have been in the country longer than five years -- an estimated 7 million people.
[snip]
President Bush early today signed off on the compromise, as did the Republican and Democratic Senate leaders. It was reached after three days of intense negotiations that came about after the Senate had reached an impasse that threatened to kill any legislation for the year. A key player was Sen. Mel Martinez, a Florida Republican who also announced the agreement in Spanish in the Senate television gallery, a first.
"We've had a huge breakthrough" overnight, said Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn, told reporters today.

Exactly what paperwork does an illegal have to document how long s/he's been here?
It's time for the House to detonate this load of garbage.
What is this last 5 years garbage? By that logic, we ought to just let Osama bin Ladin go free on September 11 of this year, as he has evaded capture for 5 years.
So, the LONGER you have been a criminal is a greater benefit to the Country, and therefore we reward you for it?
And you "prove" they were here five years by . . . .
"Exactly what paperwork does an illegal have to document how long s/he's been here?"
Very good question. Whatever the illegal doesn't have, though, will be easy enough to create, I'd guess.
There will be an entire cottage industry to create things like letters from employers, utility bills, etc.
If true it will be the last straw for me re: the GOP.
What do you mean...if true? It's true.
From further on in the article:
"President Bush early today signed off on the compromise, as did the Republican and Democratic Senate leaders."
This thing is so f****** disgusting. Who do these clown work for? The American people or business interests intent on keeping cheap illegal labor. I am increasingly coming that big business has no honor when it comes to protecting the sovereignty of this country.
Where are the provisions for border enforcement? Where are the penalties?
"Exactly what paperwork does an illegal have to document how long s/he's been here?"
By the time they get through with the details, pretty much any scrap of paper.
More importantly, what if they haven't been here for the 2, 5 or whatever length of time they finally settle on? Only a fool would believe there will be any deportations.
What a farce! I thought the isse was securing the southern border. This makes as much sense as saying if we outlaw illegals, only illegals will be outlaws.
Documentation that will be accpeted:
A receipt from a hospital emergency room where you received free care, the first dollar you made as an illegal, a note from the guy who smuggled you accross the border, cereal box tops, used tissue (able to be carbon dated), dish towels, a note from your mom, and any other document that proports to be writing on paper or a paper product stating that is ok with Johnny McCain and Uncle Ted Kennedy to be in the U.S. of A since you are doing a job no American will do.
Invest on stock of laser printer makers.
If the republican party needs a wake up call this november they sure are going to get one. Let's see what these compromisers think when they no longer have their coveted chairmanships. This was an issue dear to the base and they screwed us.
Politics has such a way with words on paper. No need to walk the talk now, is there?
It ain't over. No way this gets past the House
This is the only issue that matters to me anymore. All other political & social problems hinge on it - if it passes, its all over as far as I'm concerned.
Thank you for bringing humor to an otherwise depressing thread.
