Very interesting. Thanks for posting this. Certain quarters won't be satisfied until they've reduced Jesus to a common rabble-rouser. Once we've dumped the "Son of God" notion, we can get on with multiculturalism in earnest.

National Geographic places their own desires for confirmation of THEIR presuppositions ahead of actual fact. That's why they got caught with their pants down a couple of years ago when they trumpeted a fossil that showed a flying dinosaur. They wanted to believe it was true, so they did. They got burned big time and issued a rather haughty mea culpa.
Too bad they didn't learn their lesson.

Actually, they know the name of the Coptic monk who "found" the original manuscript in the early 4th century: Ratericos Danilos. It was revealed as a forgery because it was created using a stylus that hadn't been invented until AD 378.

In its release, National Geographic repeatedly states that it has "authenticated" the document
Post the original and let the pajamahadeen authenticate the typewriter font :-)

Great article. No one in the MSM covering this story has mentioned it could have been forged way back in the third or fourth centuries or how they are certain it was written by Judas.
It's just accepted as the Gospel truth. Amazing!

I don't think any of the New Testament is derived from first century documents or is an original.

I was listening to a dj talk about this story this morning. The DJ said that the Judas Gospel dispels the story that Judas betrayed Christ of his own will, i.e. Christ asked Judas to drop the dime on him.
IIRC, Judas committed suicide the morning after he betrayed Christ. My question is this: When did Judas have time to write his Gospel if said Gospel includes events that took place only hours before his death?

Why is even FNC reporting the story as based on a true original rather than a fake copy.
The media should be screaming fromthe top.

I tend to think this is just an ancient version of the "Da Vinci Code"...or near equivalent.
Fiction has always been popular. ;)

So what's the date of the earliest surviving manuscript of the canonical Gospels?

It sounds like the GoJ is an authentic historical artifact, just as a 2000 year-old mosaic depicting the labors of Hercules would be an authentic historical artifact. It's a shame that National Geographic damages the significance of the finding by trying to make it into something that it isn't.

Has anyone noticed how the MSM always picks Christmas and Easter to release stories questioning the Gospels? I guess this is the only time they give the subject a passing thought, so it seems appropriate to them. They never stop to think that bringing this stuff up on the most important days of the religious calendar is an insult to believers.

IMHO, here is the money quote from the article:
That is a waste of a unique finding; "The Gospel of Judas" offers rich insights into ancient Gnosticism, particularly into the way in which Gnostics saw Jewish institutions transformed by Jesus. The author also indicates that this includes a different spin on the story in John 13:21-30. Same basic facts, but different interpretation.

How could Judas have written a Gospel when by all accounts he hung himself shortly after the crucifixion. It should be noted that this Gospel was known to the early church fathers and was considered to be heretical because of its Gnostic view i.e., the Gnostics did not view Christ as a human figure. Judas is presumed to be the agent by which Christ is freed from his earthly form in order to return to his father thus dieing and resurrecting to prove the truth of his message. The original Judas gospel was written in Greek and then translated to Coptic the language of ancient Egypt. It is likely that the Greeks put the Gnostic spin to the Gospel. Important point is that by all the evidence thats out there this Gospel is false. It is interesting how the MSM highlights this anti-christian view. It is like the belief that the Da Vinci code is factual when it is in fact fictional. Strange how the Muslim faith is not subject to all of this media distortion and effort to discredit traditional Christianity.
