LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Duncan Tucker's "Transamerica" was named the outstanding film in limited release at the 17th annual GLAAD Media Awards.
The awards honor individuals and projects in the mainstream media and entertainment industries for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation presented the honors Saturday night (April 8) at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
"Brokeback Mountain" had been named outstanding wide-release film at GLAAD's New York ceremonies, which took place March 27.
At the Los Angeles event, Showtime's "The L Word" was honored as outstanding drama series, while NBC's "Will & Grace," which is in its last season, was presented the award for outstanding comedy series.
The prize for best original episode resulted in a tie between the "Best Friends" episode of "Cold Case," which aired on CBS, and the pilot episode of "My Name Is Earl," which aired on NBC.
"TransGeneration," which aired on the Sundance Channel and Logo, was chosen as outstanding documentary for its look at transgender college students.
Charlize Theron, who starred as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster," received the Vanguard Award, presented to media professionals who through their work have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.
Melissa Etheridge was awarded the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights.
The awards will be televised on Logo, MTV Networks' cable channel for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender viewers Saturday and on VH1 on Sunday.
Homosexual Agenda Ping.
So an organization dedicated to celebrating gays and lesbians in the U.S. chooses to award a film with a sympathetic transgender title character, and this is somehow supposed to be shocking or offensive.
What exactly is supposed to be "awry" about this?
RE: "Homosexual Agenda Ping."
You have a PINGLIST for that churchey hogs@*%! Patriotism, Guns, tax cuts and national defense are one thing, but slandering homosexuals to mask one's own insecurity and prejudice is another completely.
Count me out.
Hell, I thought it would have been "Larry the cable guy health inspector."
They have become one and the same.
The L Word winning best drama was a complete farce. They killed off the most popular character by giving her breast cancer. Fools.
It may interest you to know that Free Republic is a conservative forum, not a libertarian chat room.
Just a suggestion, but if you don't like the subject matter, take a pass.
I'd like to nominate Barney Frank for his outstanding performance as the lead in, "Rear Admiral."
RE: "It may interest you to know that Free Republic is a conservative forum, not a libertarian chat room."
That's okay, because it's never been conservative for the government to dictate to fellow adults what they can and cannot do with their own private lives. If you have a moral objection, then that's one thing, but there's not a goshdamn thing you can do about it except to whine and rave and let them live their lives as they choose to.
RE: "Just a suggestion, but if you don't like the subject matter, take a pass."
Sorry, but no. My mother always taught me that indifference and silence among the good permits the rise of hatred and bigotry far more than what the bad can accomplish on their own (kinda an Edmund Burke thing, come to think of it...).
RE: "So you agree that homosexuals should be allowed to marry each other, that homosexuality should be taught in schools, that abortion is a right, etc.?"
Yes (provided that they can find someone willing to perform the ceremony, of course),
No (schools are for learning, not for social or religious indoctrination of any kind),
and
No (abortion isn't even related to this issue, not even in the same ballpark, so what are you talking about?)
And I don't need to read the statement of FR's founder or agree 100% with anyone's platform to be a conservative: all I need is a belief in the rights of men and women to choose their own path in life relativily unmolested by the excessive reaches of the government. Whether it be in matters of the pocketbook or the bedroom, true conservatism is about belief in the individual over the collective, not in the belief that one can govern the unwilling by the strictutres of their own religious beliefs.
So, do you consider yourself a conservative or a libertarian?
I think this violent reaction is excessive, but on the other hand, I don't agree with the modern idea of saying, "hey, you can't help it. Go right ahead and do things that have been considered wrong for six thousand years."
Some would (incorrectly) try and claim that there is a genetic link to homosexuality, but that is no excuse. I have a relative who is a recovering alcoholic, thirty years dry, and they claim there may be a genetic link to that. However, I never once have said, "Hey, you can't help yourself...you were born that way! Here, let me pour you a scotch!" He has to make a moral decision every day...does he do what his flesh tells him feels good, or does he do what is best for his family and himself? Does he have "fun" in a way that is dangerous to his own health, or does he ask God for the strength to be different from what his flesh desires?
Until judges with "modern goggles" threw out six thousand years of good sense, sodomy was still illegal (although hard to prosecute) in most places in America. Chesterton was right when he said "Tolerance is the religion of a man with no convictions."
Mostly libertarian, which is actually more conservative than the religious extremism-driven brand.
I did not claim to speak for the founders, nor did I claim that the founders were the perfect creatures you claim them to be. Although often uncommonly wise men, they were as capable as the rest of us of petty bigotry and nonsensical actions. What is your point here?
And who here can claim a reasoning beyond their hatred of gays a little more rational than "my religion fobids it, therefore America should...". You didn't even try, presuming to base your legal beliefs on disputable matters of your faith.
Oh, and one more thing.
It's pretty odd, don't you think, that few FReepers have so far chosen to acknowledge the many conservative positions I have taken on other threads tonight before they jump to the conclusion that I am a liberal because I will not join in their persecution of gays.
Remember that blindly "Towing the line" is something the socialists and lefties are called to do, not conservatives.
