Cardinal Roger Mahony, an outspoken supporter of congressional proposals to allow illegal immigrants to become citizens, is urging immigrants not to participate in a worker and student boycott planned for May 1.

The planned boycott, coming on the heels of massive nationwide protests, calls on students and workers to stay home in support of immigrant rights.

"I believe that we can make May 1st a win-win day here in Southern California: go to work, go to school, and then join thousands of us at a major rally afterward," Mahony said in a statement released late Sunday.

Mahony suggested employers and schools set aside an hour on May 1 to discuss immigration reform. He also suggested they encourage employees and students to write letters to Congress urging sweeping reform.

Has Mahony created a monster that he has lost control of or is Mahony trying to pull an Bill Clinton and have it both ways by distancing himself from the May Day Communist Group?

Catholics should not encourage people to break laws that are not unjust (U.S. Immigration Laws are not immoral). This is what some Catholics are doing by encouraging protests and waving a carrot on a stick to those on the other side of the border.

I used to live in LA.

Mahoney was a jerk then, he's a jerk now. He's always on the wrong side of every issue.

As Mahony sows, so shall he reap. Hopefully the folks in LA will show this bafoon how much they repsect his stupidity in urging law breaking by not adding anything to the colelction basket on April 30th.

First, I am a practicing Catholic.

Second, if these Catholic Bishops want to urge "social justice" (which they should), they should be looking at the grave injustice being done to those who are following the rules and waiting their turn while these illegals push them out of the way. And then they should be addressing Vicente Fox to correct the economic system in his damned country where all the wealth is held by the ruling oligarchy and the people are driven to flee.

As far as I'm concerned, a statement by the Bishop(s) is just that - a "statement" which does not have the authority of Church teaching to compel my acceptance of it.

Maybe Phony Mahony is getting a lot of 2241 notes in the collection basket as opposed to greenbacks. I know the Archdiocese is getting a lot of negative email about his thumbing his nose at the law.

It would be nice to see a guest editorial talk about the backlash to Roger McPhony when MayDay blows up on him, abd just to stir the pot. Any good bloggers out there?

I suggest catholics do the same thing I am doing when I get a request for donation. I am politely writing back and suggesting they request the donation from their illegal immigration contingent since all my money is going to support tax funded programs paying illegals.

All I asked was whether it was actually true. If you don't have the answer, just say so.

We should have a boycott Illegal Alien MONTH, and boycott all businesses that we know of that hire these people.

What's more, go TELL them that's why you won't be doing business with them.

If congress won't do it, maybe we can start something on our own.

I think the Cardinal sees that these rallies are destined to backfire in their faces. I am hoping that is the case.

When you see such massive crowds of illegals even the most stupid and oblivious American can see there are too many of them here already! Hell, my liberal sister & mom even are against amnesty now after seeing those rallies.
