They've found reason to avoid each other in recent months, but President Bush is scheduled to meet Friday afternoon with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, officials with both administrations said.
It won't be a long session -- just enough time for the governor to press his fellow Republican on such vital California issues as the state's fragile levee system and immigration, aides in both camps said Tuesday.
Schwarzenegger will meet Bush at the airport in San Jose, then ride in the president's limousine for a joint appearance at Cisco Systems.
Bush will pitch the American Competitiveness Initiative, which, if approved by Congress, would double government funding for basic research in the physical sciences, train thousands of new science and math teachers and extend a popular tax credit businesses can receive for investing in research and development.
Bush then will head to Napa County for what his aides describe as ''down time.'' The president will visit West Sacramento, near the Capitol, on Saturday, but with the governor absent.
White House and Schwarzenegger administration officials said they did not expect Bush to bring an answer to the governor's February request for an unusual federal disaster declaration for the California levees.
The request is still actively being considered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said one White House official, speaking Tuesday on condition of anonymity because he did not want to publicly step out ahead of the negotiations.
Schwarzenegger attended a high-profile re-election event for Bush in Columbus, Ohio in 2004, and gave an impassioned endorsement of Bush at the Republican National Convention. But they have had a complicated relationship, in part because Bush is unpopular in California. About two out of three Californians disapproved of Bush's handling of the presidency in a Field Poll released earlier this month.

I hope Arnold, reminds the President, that our borders are out of control. and something needs to be done... quick..
fragile....that must be Italian
I've completely given up on Bush doing anything at all about the borders.
I hope RINOld reminds GWB that the feds owe CA FIFTY-FOUR BILLION for allowing the illegals to stay here for the past six years!
That's about the ONLY thing he might mention. Other than who is paying for it, Arnold doesn't deviate much on immigration from the Bush plan.
Bush may be getting ready to give most of CA to Mexico. All illegals will be deported to CA after it's handed over. In exchange we get Arizona and New Mexico BACK.
I was listening to KFI last night before I dozed off and I heard some audio clips of RINOld saying that the feds needed to secure the border and that he was AGAINST AMNESTY...
of course we all know that if he was serious he would have called out the CA National Guard years ago. LOL
Sorry... That doesn't even qualify as a GovernMental EnvironMental wetlands dream!!!
Hey! What about that dude on KFI that's calling himself Jesus Christ??? What's up with that???
LOL. Was the best I could come up with after a few seconds of thought. Think we should go ahead and throw in Oregon and Washington too? Perhaps just the coastal areas.
If you meant that as sarcasm, make it slightly funny. If you really believe that, get help.
Oh yeah, he opposes "amnesty"--just like Bush!
Didn't think I needed a /sarc tag, but since you recognized the possibility I guess it served its purpose. ;^)
Just the "Blue Voting" counties along the coastal areas, ok?
can't help you with that...LOL
Sunday mornings I'm at Mass.
Good for you! I'm certainly glad that's not Massachewsetts!!!
It's...A LAMP!
As in,
Fraaaa GEEEEE lay
