A CIA official who had a top role during the run-up to the Iraqi war charges the White House with ignoring intelligence that said there were no weapons of mass destruction or an active nuclear program in Iraq. The former highest ranking CIA officer in Europe, Tyler Drumheller, also says that while the intelligence community did give the White House some bad intelligence, it also gave the White House good intelligence — which the administration chose to ignore

Turned on 60 Minutes, wondering what CIA thing they would find. They found a guy with a book out. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060874996/104-9030664-2029524?v=glance&n=283155

Reporter defends release of NSA spy program

From the link:

Risen: I think that's for the same reason that this was a story that should be included in the speech, and that it was something that confirmed what they already believed about biological weapons. And I just think there was kind of a go fever on WMD and Iraq, and if you talk to people in the CIA, they felt that there was people like Tyler Drumheller, who raised that issue, were being ignored. And there were people who thought that the management of the CIA was kind of saying, you know, we'll find the WMD when we get there. And that that was the attitude.

If Drumheller was blabbing to Risen, maybe someone should talk to Drumheller...

Intelligence like this?

Mary McCarthy, the NSC senior director responsible for intelligence programs, initially cautioned Berger that the “bottom line” was that “we will need much better intelligence on this facility before we seriously consider any options.” She added that the link between Bin Ladin and al Shifa was “rather uncertain at this point.” Berger has told us that he thought about what might happen if the decision went against hitting al Shifa, and nerve gas was used in a New York subway two weeks later.44

The original sealed indictment had added that al Qaeda had “reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq.”109This passage led Clarke, who for years had read intelligence reports on Iraqi-Sudanese cooperation on chemical weapons, to speculate to Berger that a large Iraqi presence at chemical facilities in Khartoum was “probably a direct result of the Iraq–Al Qida agreement.” Clarke added that VX precursor traces found near al Shifa were the “exact formula used by Iraq.”110This language about al Qaeda’s “understanding” with Iraq had been dropped, however, when a superseding indictment was filed in November 1998.111

FWIW, depending on what Drumheller's been spewing and to whom, I'd find it anything but boring.

This was undoubtedly one of Mary McCarthy's associates at the CIA. Guess she couldn't protect him last year so he also got fired.

A Traitor speaks out

Like McCarthy, he should be executed, with Americans voting where the execution should take place, and how.

I have a splitting headache. Watched the 60 Minutes (hit)piece, including the illustrious b00b, Joe Wilson, who repeated the lies from his column of a few years back. Ed Bradley's earring popped out in his dismay at Bush's treachery. I had shut the computer off, but had to post this article. These nimrods act like patriots, and the media plays along, fooling the public (not everyone, but the ones not paying attention).

From this link:

Editor’s Note: This is an edited transcript of an interview conducted by Ian Masters with Vincent Cannistaro, the former CIA head of counterterrorism operations and intelligence director at the National Security Council under Ronald Reagan, which aired on the Los Angeles public radio KPFK on April 3, 2005....

Well, in this case, the Germans had told the CIA’s head of the European desk on the operations side, Tyler Drumheller, who I spoke to, but he wasn’t comfortable going on the radio. He was told by Curveball’s handlers in Germany that the guy was crazy and a fabricator and the real question, I guess, is he passed this information on to the top people inside the agency, the Deputy Director McLaughlin and the Director George Tenet, both of whom are now — well, I don’t know about McLaughlin. He works for CNN. But, I believe George Tenet says he doesn’t remember the conversation.

This is the meme of the day.

WMD was not the sole reason or even the primary reason for going into Iraq. The first World Trade Center attack traces back to Saddam. If you scratch a little, the second one traces back to him as well. Al Qaeda was a hired gun in a "false flag" operation.

Furthermore, Tyler admits himself that CIA was delivering conflicting information. When you're the guy at the top, you have to choose which one you believe, and go with it.

Either could be wrong; what is the consequence if Saddam has no WMD and you take him out anyway? What is the consequence if he has WMD and you fail to act?

As for nukes, its not just a nuclear program, they can be bought on the market; if Saddam wants a nuke, sooner or later he's going to get one. Every few months, before the war, they would bust a gang trying to smuggle nuclear materials out of the former USSR. Do you take him down before he gets one, and suffer the political consequences, or do you wait until he provably has one and now your options just got a lot narrower?

If this is what passes for analysis at CIA, heaven help us.
