Has there ever been a time when the people of this tiny island nation have ever gotten along?

Not really, but recently the muslims became a party to the conflict. The Sri Lankan army raised a whole new "Muslim Battalion".

Muslims had nothing to do with the origins of this conflict, or its continuation.

They've been the victims of Tamil Tiger attacks several times, hence the government forming the Muslim battalion.
