WASHINGTON
Answering criticism about security gaps at U.S. seaports, the Bush administration said Tuesday it will conduct background checks on an estimated 400,000 port workers to ensure they do not pose a terrorist threat.
Names of employees who work in the most sensitive areas of ports will be matched against government terror watch lists and immigration databases, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said. Additionally, the Homeland Security Department will issue tamper-free identification cards to roughly 750,000 workers _ including truckers and rail employees _ who have unrestricted assess to ports.
Better late than never I guess. They sure got in a hurry on this one!
True but Better late than never don't you think?
They are finally on the right track.
Well, W, I voted for you twice, and I'm disappointed. You've had five years to secure our borders and ports, and you're just starting to talk about it ?
Hypocrite.
Will wants and warrants count? Charleston will shut down.
Another waste of money...these are UNION jobs, and you'll never get rid of them if you wanted to....
All he's had to do for all this time is topple the Taliban, turn Iraq into a Democracy.
Any Joe could do that, right?
So what's the problem?
These "tamper proof ID cards" will be on sale in Macarthur Park a couple of days after they are first issued.
Ask the guy who is selling Matriculas Consulares when he expects to have them in stock.
It's smoke and mirrors. Brit Hume just said that it wouldn't include a "criminal" background check. That kind of a check would probably put 99% of those union thugs out of a job.
Are you saying that you won't vote for him again? Sure hope THAT doesn't spread.
{"tamper proof ID cards"}
No, these are the new and improved 'tamper FREE ID cards'
Seems like we republicans fought too hard for too little the last couple of elections.
Here we go again...
We control both houses of Congress with a Republican President for the first time in fifty years, to me, that is very significant, in my opinion.
Calling THIS President a hypocrite bothers me, especially by a self professed Republican. ( I'll capitalize the R )
What a wasted opportunity...It may not happen again for fifty more years...If Mexico still allows us to have a congress in fifty years.
Reagan accomplished more with congress against him.
