LATINO STUDENT PROTEST NOT AUTHORIZED
The Shelbyville Times-Gazette ^ | 25 April 2006 | John Carney

Latino community and St. William Catholic Church leaders say they have nothing to do with a threatened walkout Thursday by Latino students at Central High School. Principal Don Embry, meanwhile, says the effort to organize the protest was largely the work of one student, who he said has withdrawn her proposal after speaking with school officials. Embry says he does not expect any problems on Thursday. "I really don't anticipate anything happening," said Embry. "It's not a widespread deal."

A student or students had distributed a flyer, in Spanish, to several businesses serving the Spanish language market calling for students to leave high school on Thursday and gather at the church. The protest was meant as a response to proposed anti-immigration legislation. Similar protests have been held around the country.

But St. William Catholic Church has nothing to do with the protest and does not endorse it, said the Rev. Richard Driscoll, the parish priest. He, along with local Latino leaders Miguel Gonzalez and Luci Taylor, met with SCHS officials Tuesday morning to assure them that the event was not authorized by the church or by El Centro Latino, a local organization which addresses the needs of the Latino community. The church is now distributing its own Spanish-language flyer, disassociating itself from the protest and urging parents not to let their teens leave school. Driscoll and Gonzalez said they're sympathetic to the wish of teens to make their voices heard, but said there are other, more constructive ways to do so after school hours.

Embry said the would-be protest was the work of one or two students. He said that he's spoken to one of the organizers and that she backed down after being told that a walkout would be counterproductive. Embry also said he was actually approached by other Latino students who wanted to reassure him that they weren't involved. "It's not an organized effort," said Embry. He said student involvement in the protest seems to be a dead issue and that he's now "stomping out the fires" in terms of rumors outside the school. School Superintendent Ed Gray said he encourages students to make their voices heard -- but not in a way that interferes with school operations. "I'm all for protests," said Gray. "They're good for the soul. It's the American way." At the same time, said Gray, "We're in education. Therefore, anything that disrupts the education process, we deal with."

Illegal immigration has been a hot political topic in recent weeks. Some have proposed building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico and making a concerted effort to deport illegal immigrants. Others, including President Bush, have proposed allowing some illegals to apply for a "guest worker" program which would allow them to stay in the country. There are differing opinions about the economic impact of illegal immigrants. Some say they do jobs which would otherwise be difficult or impossible to fill and that industry would suffer if they were deported. Others, however, say they take too much in terms of social services, educational and infrastructure costs.

Very interesting. Why would this girl pass out a flyer asking students to meet at St. Williams if she did not feel it would be approved? Big question there. Suddenly, when the community reacts (You can't imagine the reaction behind closed doors in Shelbyville, TN -- I promise.) the priest suddenly says the catholic church has nothing to do with it. Ha ha ha. Then, he says he supports the students having a "voice" -- ha ha ha. Other catholic priests have openly supported the protests (depending upon the percentage of Hispanics in their parish) including "cardinal Mahoney" and this guy says no?

This stupid mess is going to lead to war. Something should have been done a long time ago and now the cancer is so big it's going to take armed conflict to decide who is right or wrong. No one is going to win.

Let them walk out and then lock the doors.

How do you say "pass the plate" in the Catholic church. They know full well most of these illegals are Catholic and will drop something in the plate while not dropping enough in taxes. Render unto Caesar you law breakers.

I would tend to agree that money is part of the motivation. Bigger yet is the political influence and power some want to acquire.

"For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul?" Jesus

The Catholic Church and Cardinal Mahony have created a situation that is out of control!

The illegal alien amnesty will only lead to anarchy, lawlessness and marxism just like we have in Mexico, Central America and South America!

If you want your country to go that way follow Cardinal Mahony & the Catholic Church!

I would really like to know the behind-the-scenes reason as to how the protest got shut down so quickly. Also, the priest was not in favor (openly) of the students leaving school and protesting. Some folks in Shelbyville put the hammer down. Perhaps a radical Hispanic organization should go to Shelbyville and show the locals who's boss and not let them tell the students that they can't leave school and protest there.

If the Hispanics want to crush all opposition to their agenda, go to Tennessee and mount huge protests. If they can push their will there, they have the whole thing won without a shot being fired -- I promise.

Davy Crockett was from Tennessee and the college football team there is named for the volunteers that went to Texas with Sam Houston to fight against the mexicans.

'nuff said.

I still think they should show how macho they are and initiate some major protests in Tennessee. I stand by my advice.
