Four bus loads of students from O'Brien Middle School made the four-hour trip to Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, Calif., only to find the amusement park's gates locked Monday. The school-sponsored trip was supposed to reward top students.
"It was pretty much a fiasco," said Washoe County School District spokesman Steve Mulvenon. "They ended up wasting a day that those kids could have better spent in class or doing what they were going to do at the park."
School officials said the $50 fee will be refunded, and the tour company that arranged the trip has agreed to pay for the next one. "The tour company neglected to check the schedule," Mulvenon said.
"It is just a bummer for the kids," said parent Jeff Wood. "Now, they will have to wait another month to go and a lot of the kids might not be able to go then."
Principal Scott Grange said the school was even given printed tickets with Monday's date on them.
"But shame on us for not checking," he said.
And these people are teaching our kids.
"Now what did we learn today, children?"
here is a bus trip nightmare.
Oh my...I can't help but think of that movie with Chevy Chase, "Summer Vacation" I think it was....
Just going to the sporting goods store, to buy sporting goods.
I can't entirely blame the school. We got suckered into going to Marine World and finding it closed. The very day we were there, we were still hearing ads on the radio stating that it was open every day, seven days a week. Even their answering machine stated the same. They are very flakey with publicizing their schedule. We complained and received free tickets for a later date.
There were probably a hundred other cars in the parking lot full of disappointed, crying kids. I have no use for Marine World since then.
Hope they aren't talking 4 hours one way. That would have really been "dumb" to plan a trip that required 8 hours of travel, and plan it for as a day outing.
They hired a tour company they had tickets with the date on them. I fail to see where they were at fault.
Lol, thanks. Too funny.
Sounds like the fiasco of a Spanish trip my class went on once. We were supposed to see a Spanish play and then eat lunch at a Spanish restaurant. The play went alright, but the restaurant thought our order was for 2 p.m. instead of 11:30. So they piled us back on the buses and we started the trip home only there was this guy driving down the highway doing some very inappropriate things. Of course the school called the cops on him and we ended up stuck at a gas station while the cops talked to every kid on two buses. It eventually turned out that the school reported the wrong license plate number so they never caught the guy. And I ended up in the hospital, but that's a different story.
When did Marine World become a Six Flags? I remember going there when I was 4 years old. I thought it was closed down.
It was 4 hours one way. Washoe County is where Reno, NV is.
I mainly blame the tour company. I got a tour to Denmark that was screwed up because the tour company didn't know that a certain important day was a national holiday in Denmark.
Never mind. The Marine World I went to when I was little was near LA.
Oh, good grief! And you can just hear in the distance the rumble of a stampede of lawyer ready to sue the socks of everybody and his brother claiming these kids will be "emotionally scarred" for life.
