Local workers fear immigration sweeps
Posted 4/28/06
BAKERSFIELD - For the past couple of weeks, there has been concern over immigration sweeps taking place country-wide including those in Kern County.
Though KGET-17 news has not been able to find anyone who was arrested, the fear is running rampant that Border Patrol Agents are showing up at workplaces to deport people in large numbers.
But, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says it is not doing anything out of the ordinary.
However, as rumors continue to fly about deportation, some people are taking extra precaution.
For the past several days immigrants, legal and undocumented, especially in construction, have been lying low and staying home.
Dave Bright, an electrician says something happened at his work earlier this week, a construction site in southwest Bakersfield.
He says, two guys were working in an area and one received a phone call. Then, he started yelling at the other one and I thought they were fighting, and they were throwing their reels off their trucks.
Bright says he went up to a supervisor to see what was going on and he said someone called La Migra, a nickname for Border Patrol in Spanish.
They were calling each other on the phone and they took off running and went out through the back of the fields, Bright said. And, then we never saw them again for the rest of the day.
As rumors are flying about La Migra, Jose Morales says though he's scared, he still shows up because he needs the work.
Morales says he has papers to be in the U.S, but he's afraid he will still be shipped back. He said hes also afraid the Border Patrol will take his coworkers and he'll be left in the U.S. all by himself.
Overall, the fear has taken its toll on several housing construction sites.
Crew Leader Eumaro Hernandez says, The last three days we've been out of work because every people get scared as soon as they hear about the La Migra and they run.
Crew leaders also say that on any given day there are usually about 60 to 70 workers at this particular construction site. But, because of the fears of being deported there are probably about 15 workers.
So, many immigrant workers remain at home and don't want to show up to work because theyre scared of being deported.
ICE says in a statement: these operations are not random sweeps, but carefully planned enforcement actions that result from investigative leads and intelligence.
Heh....
There is an easy way around this fear. GO HOME!AWB
I don't want them to be scared or live in fear. I want them to be terrified. I want them to know that, sooner or later, someone is coming for them. I want them to know that the law abiding American citizens will accept no less. I want their illegal occupation to be a a nightmare, a living hell for them until they leave to make way for honest, decent immigrants who respect our laws; legal immigrants who want become Americans and love this land.
Agreed! 100%
All they have to fear is fear itself.
Our politicians will not allow law enforcement types to do their jobs in this respect.
I guess we can dream, but the truth is, there is no political will on either side to remove these criminals and thwart the invasion. They have nothing to worry about. The illegals get the express train to free everything. Americans get screwed.
**immigration sweeps**
They are coming!
The INS will be photographing all the marchers on monday, won't they?
This is just some fake'm to cover the politicians. No fence, no credibility.
Your mean. I like you. Beware the BushBOTS.
The threat of stepped up interior enforcement is simply part of a "show" to enable Bush and Congress to claim that the new policies and practices are already working.
Once the legislation is passed and signed, expect reverting to business as usual. That might be statistically a big increase.
From virtually nothing, to very little can be a big percent increase, hence business as usual will be very little.
I still say...A few jet fighters at tree top level all along the border 24/7 would do wonders.....
These rumors are being planted to hype up anger and fear which will, in turn, increase the numbers of people participating in the "shut down the cities" protest on Monday.
And these construction companies have the gall to say they "don't know" if they are employing illegals! I haven't heard such flagrant lying since Hillery's grand jury testimony. I'm sure the prices of the homes they are building reflect the cut-rate, unskilled labor that's going into them, right?
Round em all up and send them home one way.
What gets me about these rumors is that the government falls all over itself to reassure people that it's not upholding the law and there's nothing to fear. When was the last time the IRS told the public that it's not going to go after tax dodgers, or the EPA told us we can empty toxic waste into streams because they have no intention of trying to enforce environmental laws?

It's interesting how stories like this are being published all over the place. This illegal immigration problem must be pretty widespread, huh?
