Debra J Saunders: The Great American turnoff (California)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 04/30/2006 | Debra J Saunders

Posted on 04/30/2006 9:09:32 AM PDT by calcowgirl

I AM ONE American who will be moved in the direction not intended by sponsors of the May 1 National Day Without Immigrants Great American Boycott demonstrations.

(snip)

When I read, no escuela, (no school) on MAPA flyers, and that the Los Angeles Times reported that in Southern California some 40,000 students may have skipped school to join in past protests, I think of the 18 percent of Latino high-school seniors who have not yet passed the state exit exam.

When I read no trabajo (no work), I see activists who are ready to stick it to their most potent lobby, American employers, which makes them ingrates.

Then, when MAPA President Nativo Lopez calls for "no employer sanctions, and no guest-worker programs," that tells me he wants no laws whatsoever governing who can come to and work in America.

When the California Senate passes a resolution in favor of the May 1 boycott, and doesn't even bother to tell children to go to school, I am grateful for term limits and yearn for reapportionment.

When Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa go public to bemoan stupid racist threats and letters they have received, I know I can match them epithet for epithet, except I wouldn't give the nut jobs who send such missives the satisfaction.

When organizers in Mexico call for a "Nothing Gringo" boycott of American goods on May 1, I know that racism visits all sides of this debate.

The bottom line is that while these demonstrations, I am told, are supposed to make me feel better about illegal immigrants, I feel angry when I see thousands of people who knowingly break American law, yet somehow feel entitled to do so and outraged that they have not been sufficiently rewarded for it.

I can only say that when I read no trabajo and no escuela and no compra" (no shopping) and no venta (no selling), my response is: "No mas." No more.

Here in Discovery Bay we have a new upscale restaurant. My wife and I went in for dinner Thursday night last week. When we got up to the door we saw a sign "We will be closed on Monday May 1 in support for the Great American Boycott". We ordered a drink and talked about it for a minute. I then approached the owner who I happen know and asked why he would support such a boycott and added the there was nothing American about. I explained that the boycott was organized by several communist backed organizations and people who believe in La Reconquista (La Raza)... the re conquering of the southern staes by colonization and eventually by force. I also told him that the FOREIGN illegals were in America demanding that we change our laws to accomodate them ... I explained that amoung their demands were a totally open border, amnesty, and citizenship for they and their families. He said he would not have any kitchen staff ... I said ... so what ... why don't you come in and just cook burgers and hotdogs for a day and keep the bar open. He said that the illegals do the jobs that Americans won't do. I said you mean they do the jobs that americans won't do ... for slave wages ... and besides that I personally know several American people who would LOVE to have a job here. He just shrugged it off. To that I said ... we'll you won't be seeing us in here anymore ... as we will be participating in the "Great American Former Customer Boycott" ... lets see who you can do without .... illegal employees or customers. Then my wife went up to him ... and was NOT quite as nice as I was. My wife and I then drove to the local pizza parlor (who is open on Monday BTW) and had salad bar. It was more healthy and $80.00 cheaper.

Point is ... that is exactly what needs to be done to those who honor Pinko de Mayo tomorrow. Don't patronize those who employ illegals

Right. Like you would know if a worker was illegal or legal?

When was the last time you were asked for your marriage certificate?

Debra Saunders is a democrat, but one of the more rational columnists.

The commies here in Flagstaff, AZ have plastered the town with red posters proclaiming May 1 A Day of International Worker Solidarity. I plan to do all my week's worth of shopping tomorrow and maybe buy some early Christmas presents as well. I will also check out which businesses are closed in support of the boycott so I can shun them in the future.

I said you mean they do the jobs that americans won't do ... for slave wages ...

And the neverending stream of more destitute people coming to this country WILL GUARANTEE that those slave wages REMAIN slave wages. Don't they get it?? And endless supply of cheap labor will ensure that wages never rise.

I guess that doesn't bother them though as long as there's free welfare, schooling, and health care.

This employer who employs illegals is violating labor laws, and cheating on tax laws. Does this restaurant have a name that could be mentioned in a letter to the local editor?

My bar will be open tomorrow. Can't think of any business closing in my little part of Texas.

I won't say that the boycott will have it's intended effect, but for me it will work. I'm not going anywhere near areas that have thousands of people in the streets. This pi$$es me off, because there are places downtown I need to go to on Monday.

I predict a backlash.

Napa, surrounded by vineyards dependent on cheap illegal labor for your drinking enjoyment. (Picking machines bruise the poor wittle grapes).

I hope all the latinos in Massachusetts honor the boycott. I will do my grocery shopping at Market Basket for the first time in years, just to see if it is not still like shopping in Mexico City.
