With more than half of precincts reporting, Blackwell had 257,531 votes, or 55 percent, compared with 208,481, or 45 percent, for Attorney General Jim Petro.

Blackwell's prominence as a leading black voice in the GOP could be pivotal to Republicans.

He is the first black candidate to run for governor in Ohio.

Forget everything else--when I see him on the tube, he's just interesting to listen to. I don't live in Ohio but I find him smart and very human.

The Republican insiders I know are all deeply disappointed that Petro has lost to Ken Blackwell in the primary. The RINOs really hate him and they're predicting a dem win in the general. We'll see. I hope Ken pulls it off but it doesn't seem like his party is behind him.

Strickland handily defeated a former state legislator for the nomination.

With 60 percent of precincts reporting, he had 331,823 votes, or 78 percent.

Republicans targeted the House seat Strickland leaves open as one of its best shots nationally to gain a Democratic congressional spot.

They have been helped by the fact the Democrats' leading candidate must run as a write-in due to a filing mistake.

Republican incumbent Mike DeWine and Rep. Sherrod Brown easily won their primaries Tuesday, with voters validating what already had been considered one of the country’s top U.S. Senate races.

With two precincts reporting unofficial results, Brown won the Democratic primary with 1,015 votes, or 84 percent.

DeWine beat two opponents with 1,311 votes, or 79 percent.

He's a Dem nightmare.

Considering the train wreck that was the Taft administration to have a Pubbie elected again would be an amazing story - but I won't hold my breath waiting for the media to bang on about Blackwell/Ohio as a 'pivotal' election....instead they'll concentrate on some backwater Congressional district that might go Dem if none of the buses carrying the voters to the polls (free, of course) breaks down.

It's really sad when Republicans don't want to rally behind a black conservative that has a chance to win.

There are conservatives who are also dissappointed, not because Petro was the perfect conservative, but because they see Blackwell as more of an opportunist than a strong conservative figure.

I don't live in Ohio so it didn't matter but I was pulling for Petro. But now that it's Blackwell, I hope the Petro people can forget all the horribly negative things Blackwell said about them, and join him to kick the democrats in November.

The problem with negative campaigns is they cause hurt feelings.

Blackwell better win, or it will set back the conservative movement considerably. All conservatives better be supporting this nominee with their time and effort.

All I know of Mr. Blackwell is what I saw during the 2004 election dust-up in Ohio, and he seemed very sensible, very articulate, and certainly kept his head when all around him were losing theirs. Good luck to him!

But us Blackwell people will forgive all the trashing, the dirty dealing, and the targeted attacks against Ken Blackwell, and welcome the Petro people home. No hard feelings.

The conservatives I know are damn glad Blackwell won over Petro. Petro is just another RINO we did not need and would have gotten his ass handed to him in November because conservatives like me would not vote for him.

Is Blackwell a a political opportunitst? Well I guess all Politicos are to some extent, but Blackwell is a real deal conservative and the Ohio RINO establishment types like DeWhiner and Voinobitch are afraid of him. You ought to be thanking him since he single handidly negated the rampant vote fraud in Ohio, basically saving Bush's re-election in 04.
