SIERRA VISTA — A soldier whose wife and children live in Sierra Vista was killed in action in Baghdad on Thursday.

First Sgt. Bobby Mendez, 38, died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

His wife Jennifer said she and her children were informed of his death last week.

The soldier is also survived by two daughters, Thyiena, 13, and Chyanne, 7, and a son, Quentin, 12.

According to a press release from Fort Hood, Texas, Mendez, was assigned to the 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, where he was an intelligence analyst.

He reported to Fort Hood in January 2002 and deployed to Iraq in November 2004.

Mendez, who enlisted in the Army in October 1987, is from Brooklyn, N.Y.

According to his wife there will be a visitation at the Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

A memorial service will be held at the Main Post Chapel at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by interment at the old post cemetery on Fort Huachuca, she said.

It's said such brave men have to fight an enemy whose only fighting prowess is to plant hidden bombs and run.
