Sacramento -- Bleary-eyed lawmakers voted early today to put a $37 billion package of bonds intended to fix levees and build new highways and schools on the November ballot.
"Today we made a giant step forward in terms of our commitment to the state's economy and in terms of strengthening our crumbling infrastructure," said Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland. "We also showed what bipartisanship can look like."
An attempt by the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to put a larger bond on the June ballot failed two months ago. Of the four bonds, transportation is the largest, at $20 billion with nearly half spent on improving transit systems and reducing congestion along major highway corridors.
Another measure would spend $10.4 billion on building, modernizing and rehabilitating public schools, community colleges and public universities.
Buttressing the state's aging levees and other flood control projects would get $4.1 billion. Another $2.6 billion is pegged for housing programs promoting urban housing development and the construction of homes near transit hubs.
Another measure lawmakers want to place on the November ballot would make it harder to use gasoline sales taxes, which are supposed to be spent on transportation projects, to balance the budget.
Even though the proposal worked out by legislative leaders is a fraction of the 10-year, $222 billion public works investment plan he unveiled in January, the bonds give the Republican governor a tangible victory he can take credit for as he runs for re-election.

That's a Kennedy joke.
Another measure lawmakers want to place on the November ballot would make it harder impossible to use gasoline sales taxes, which are supposed to be spent on transportation projects, to balance the budget.
I cannot vote to give the FOOLS in Sac.37 billon dollars.
Neither can I, but what do you want to bet that the bond issues pass anyway?
Bipartisanship looks like more debt? I might have known.

Deport the illegal invaders, we won't have to build new highways and schools.
The only thing they're making "harder" with their bogus "Bipartisanship" around here is... MY HEART!!!
They can take all the social engineering called "transit" and just "shove it!" (where the CA sun don't shine!!!)
Transit is the biggest, most bogus pantload that only serves as a backdrop for Metro-Sexual graphitti!!! (however you spell it) What a WASTE!!!
The only thing bipartisnaship is that future generations will be on the hook for the debt.
Those who profit most from this "investment" are investment and brokerage houses.
There will be 2 sure votes against it in this house!
Mass transit is nothing but cheap transportation for welfare receipient and illegal aliens at a very high cost to taxpayers and to get from where you are to where you need to go it's a total joke.
Why can't we get the rest of Cauleeforneeuns to be as well versed and reasonable as the two votes in your house??? (kinda reminds me of the two votes in the Wasp's Nest)
Who voted against this travesty???
It's several separate bills so I'm not sure. I can research it but have to work the Fair Oaks Fiesta Days. Our Grange is serving breakfast.

Since I'm "batching it" for the next 4 days, I think I'll drop by if it's ok.
Sure. We'll be in the club house in Fair Oaks. We open at 7. Not sure how long we serve but it will be 10 at least. I can put in a good word with the chef and maybe get your eggs anyway you want em. Otherwise they will be scrambled.
I now have it on good authority that we are serving until 11.
