Well, if you do know so much about baseball perhaps you can tell me... how many cc's does it take to move a fly-out to an HR? There is no question that Bonds is an exceptional ballplayer. Although there will always be variation even among the best, virtually everyone in MLB is top shelf or they wouldn't be there. The issue is: did he pad his numbers by using drugs? You can pretend all you want; there is information to suggest he did. It's nice that you know the guy, but it's irrelevant, and so is his race.

You can post all you want about how great a player Barry Bonds is -- and has been. But there is no getting around the fact that he has been a major factor in baseball's decline from a great sport to a silly, contrived caricature along the lines of the World Wrestling Federation. He certainly wasn't the only one who bears responsibility . . . I've made the case that it began in the early 1990s with knuckleheads like Brady Anderson and Lenny Dykstra, and reached its peak of idiocy with guys like Sosa, McGwire, and Bonds.

Baseball has been paying a serious price for this, and it has only just begun. I predict that within 20 years, baseball will hold about the same level of attention in this country as soccer -- a sport dominated by Spanish-speaking immigrants and very popular among them, but ranked down below late-night ESPN pool tournaments as far as its market appeal goes.
