The Great Shambino
The Washington Times ^ | 5-9-06 | Dan Daly

Posted on 05/09/2006 11:08:28 AM PDT by JZelle

Barry Bonds circles the bases these days to the sound of one hand clapping ... and one knee creaking. The Shambino is just a homer away from 714 -- Babe Ruth's address -- but the only people outside of McCovey Cove who seem to care are the ones at ESPN, his own private Paraguay. Barry's their boy. To the bitter end. And rarely has the pursuit of a record left such a sour taste. Indeed, Bonds' growing home run total elicits about the same response from the masses as that tote board in New York City, the one that keeps track of the national debt. Baseball may have given Barry BALCO a free pass, but in the court of public opinion he's already been affixed with the Scarlet Asterisk.

The magnitude of this fraud can be expressed in a few numbers. From 1986 to 1998, Barry averaged a homer every 16.1 at bats. Since then, in defiance of all anatomical logic, he has averaged a homer every 8.6 at bats. What exactly does this mean? It means that, thanks to the wonders of "flaxseed oil" and assorted other magic elixirs, he has hit 142 more homers than he would have (at his previous rate). It means that instead of closing in on Harmon Killebrew (573) right now -- with Frank Robinson (586) just ahead -- he's drawing a bead on the Sultan of Swat.

Preach!

I saw Joe Morgan try his darnedest to spin this with race. According to Joe race comes into every situation in America. If it's possible to involve race, then it's a deciding factor, according to Joe. Now, if a white man said such rubbish, he'd be branded a racist. In fact, I believe that is just about text book racisim. But, Joe will continue to broadcast games, without even a peep about this lattest bit of bile he let out.

I digress. Barry Bond's problem isn't steroids, or race. Barry Bond's problem is he has presented the personna of the ultimate spoiled rich kid with a chip on his shoulder. A truely unlikable person who has had a habit of not performing in the playoffs.

Barry's dad Bobby, was a pro. Barry didn't come from the streets, but was never shy about claiming his race kept him down/apart from others. Bah! Barry, just go away.

I love ESPN but.... they have been promoting Bariod as if he was Cal Ripken Jr. Bariod always has been and always will be a classless jackass. It's too bad ESPN will run all Barry al the time after he passes Babe Ruth. It should be ignored when it happens, but I know that is only wishfull thinking on my part. It will be a sad day for Baseball when The mighty Babe gets passed by the worst example of an athlete ever.

Joe Morgan fell down many years ago, and can't get up. A shame.

"It should be ignored when it happens"

That's easy. I'll ignore it. Don't watch that garbage ESPN pushes and it will go away.

"The mighty Babe gets passed by the worst example of an athlete ever."

Babe Ruth's place in baseball lore is secure. What Bonds does is almost immaterial. And... worst example ever? C'mon, a little over the top. I don't like Bonds, and he's done crappy things, but, I know of worse examples. I watched Albert Belle for one. :)

During batting practice recently, a foul ball caromed, "Three Stooges"-like, off Bonds' cranium. The only thing missing was the sound of birds chirping.

ROFL! This article nails Bonds' ass.

Oh, really? Funny how Mr. Science didn't bother extrapolating exactly how he arrived at "142 more homers," how many Bonds would have had in his estimation, or whether or not he included Bonds' 105 homers since 2003, hit while mandatory and random testing has been in effect.

But if and when he does cross the finish line, it will be as a latter-day Rosie Ruiz, not as the greatest slugger in hardball history. That's the punishment that awaits him (other than the eternal damnation, that is).

This guy is as good a statistician as he is a writer.

Apparently, this is a guy who is found in every metro rag's sports staff: The Designated Urinator. His job is not to offer intelligent analysis, it is to be a wild-eyed babbler who "writes stuff just to sell papers." For the health of his coworkers, I hope he zipped up and washed his hands after writing this rant.

I fail too see any racial element to the Bariod situation. Bonds made his damn bed, now he needs to sleep in it. Bonds cheated, and he has proven to be a no class jackass his entire career. Race has nothing to do with it.

You can't tell how he reached that figure? He multiplied Bonds' at bats since 98 by the old HR rate.

...or whether or not he included Bonds' 105 homers since 2003, hit while mandatory and random testing has been in effect.

Mandatory and random testing for what?

If they weren't testing for exactly what he was using, they would not have detected what he was using.

"You can't tell how he reached that figure? "

Psst, don't confuse this guy with facts. The first line of his profile is: "Let me interject at this point that I am a black man myself..."

Sounds like he's in the Joe Morgan camp. Everything is about race. And if it isn't, we'll find a way to make it so.

Are you calling me a racist?

I'm telling YOU that you denigrate a black guy (Bonds) by saying he took drugs that were illegal to the game. There is NO PROOF OF THAT! When he took whatever he took they were not illegal.

You are wrong. You are foolish on this.

If you think that you are a racist..... go for it. I never said that you were, Dukie. You seem to have a guilty conscience on that.

By the way, there are a number of other good reasons why the silly numbers that you produced would occur naturally in baseball as a player matures into his mid 30's and later.

Are you a racist??? ........... only you know that.

As The Sundance Kid said early in the movie when the poker player said to him...."if I draw on you, you probably will kill me" .... "there is that possibility."

By the way novice............. he's hitting a homerun on a BUM FRONT LEG THIS YEAR once every 12 at bats. He's most likely not taking any drugs. How do you explain that? You and the rest are clueless on Barry.

Hate someone else.

Who, besides you and other people who don't know jack, is alleging he has used anything illegal since mandatory testing started?

At least the authors of Game of Shadows limit their accusations to testimony and anecdotes, and their detail of alleged juicing only goes up to 2002, the last season before testing.

If you got more, bring it. If you don't, shaddup.

No, Bob Uecker

............... on a little league game in which "my" son, Bobby Jr., played:

He struck out three times and lost the game for the team when a ball went through his legs at third base. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we left the parking lot. Gosh, I was proud. A chip off the old block.

LOL
