Council backs impeachment of Bush

CHAPEL HILL -- The Town Council unanimously backed a call Monday for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, in a meeting in which it managed to touch on politics, panhandling and downtown parking.

The council also heard that feelings were somewhat divided about a possible "neighborhood conservation district" for Coker Hills.

On the political front, the council voted 8-0 in favor of a call for impeaching President Bush, reacting to a petition from the Elders for Peace group from the Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill. The council members, all registered Democrats, passed the resolution without comment.

"The Constitution is under attack," charged Bob Gwyn, the group's chairman. "We have a president who is taking power unto himself, power from the Congress and from the courts.

"Why bring this to you? You are the closest governmental body to the people," he said.

Nancy and Hank Elkins urged the council to back the resolution as well, pointing to issues such as the war in Iraq, allegations of prisons and torture overseas and domestic wiretapping.

"The very nature of our country demands that George Bush be impeached," Nancy Elkins contended. "If we don't, what are the future citizens of our country going to think we were doing when we were allowing all of this?"

Councilman Jim Ward was out of town Monday. Last October, all nine members voted to back citizen petitions calling on the Bush administration and the U.S. Congress to end the war in Iraq.

In its relatively short, 90-minute session, the council also:

-- Heard a request from the Downtown Partnership to support the installation of a "giving kiosk" on the sidewalk in the 100 block of Franklin Street. People could feed coins or bills into the kiosk for charities instead of giving them to people asking for money in downtown.

Councilman Cam Hill asked for the council to see the final design before approving, and council members Sally Greene and Mark Kleinschmidt said they wanted to learn more about the process that led to choosing metal artist Callie Warner and to the design itself.

"It's a great idea," Greene said. "I just think it needs to be a very open and collaborative process."

-- Agreed to form a new Downtown Parking Citizens Committee to look at a wide range of issues related to downtown parking. The committee is charged with proposing a plan for addressing the needs it identifies by June 30, 2007.

-- Got a request from Brian Sanders, a resident of Clayton Road in Coker Hills, to halt the planning for a new neighborhood conservation district there. Sanders argued the NCD idea had "fractured our neighborhood down to its foundation."

But Jill Blackburn, president of the Coker Hills Neighborhood Association, took issue with Sanders' description of a major rift, and she urged the council to stay the course toward creating an NDC.

Democrats apparently have no grasp of the way the system of American governance works.

Since when did the USA take a "roll call" of all of the cities and towns in America as to whether to impeach a POTUS???

No wonder the terrorists picked this country to attack.

Well at least the impeachment process is being done by non partisan, unbiased, open minded, non judgemental left wing groups. :)

Well, I have some conservative friends in CH (yes, there are a FEW) so I'll have to say no on that.

But we can start by knocking down the Dean Dome! :)

Chapel Hill...is this North Carolina's version of Madistan, Wisconsin? I bet they've been voted one of the best places to live in the US...just like Madistan.

reacting to a petition from the Elders for Peace group from the Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill.

Did the local (absolutely hate filled) democrats promise them bigger Social Security checks if they played along?

Elderly people are easily deceived. Like government schools kids, they're constantly used as political pawns.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over this. It's not like they're going to commit anarchy in the streets or anything. What would they do? Throw used Depends at us?
