EU To Propose 'Bold' Iran Package

EU to propose 'bold' Iran package

Solana says Iran will find it hard to refuse the "generous" EU package

The EU is preparing a new package of measures that it hopes will convince Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions, top EU diplomat Javier Solana has said. The "bold" package would include economic, nuclear, and possibly security guarantees, Mr Solana said.

The incentives would be difficult for Tehran to refuse if what it really wanted was nuclear energy, he said.

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels, partly for discussions on Iran's nuclear programme.

The EU and the United States fear that Iran - despite its denials - is actually trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear programme is aimed at meeting its energy needs only. It insists on its right to enrich uranium.

Mr Solana dismissed comments on Sunday by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said Iran will reject any offer to resolve the dispute over its nuclear programme that forces it to halt its "peaceful activities".

The US and some European governments are seeking a tough resolution on Iran at the UN Security Council.

Both China and Russia - both veto-holding members of the Security Council - do not want to support any resolution that might eventually lead to further resolutions threatening sanctions or military action.

Annan hopes

In a separate development, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for urgent action to end the stand-off over nuclear issues with both Iran and North Korea.

"The international community has to take very urgent steps to deal with these issues before we have a cascade of a proliferation of nuclear weapons," he told a news conference in Seoul.

Mr Annan is in South Korea at the start of a two-week East Asian tour.

He said that that the meeting of foreign ministers from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany in New York last week was cause for renewed confidence in a diplomatic solution on Iran.

"I am encouraged by the intensified diplomatic efforts to resolve this issue peacefully and seek a negotiated settlement," he said.

They'll accept the package.

AND they'll continue their enrichment program as before.

One notes that IRAN wasn't there, where is the encouragement?

True, but that will buy european time to come up with an even bolder appeasement package.

Shall we start a pool to predict which will come first?:

A)Second appeasement package

B)Iranian nuclear bomb

Close. Iran will hold out for a BIGGER package, take it, and then enrich anyway. And when they DO develop nuclear weapons, Iran will be all too willing to use nuclear blackmail to get $$ from Western Europe. Europe, they name is cowardice.

Of course, we're following their lead (don't ask me why). Who is more the fool, the fool or the fool who follows them?

A European diplomat made a hilarious statement on NPR the other day. Speaking about dealing with Iran, he said,

"Sometimes the best stick is a very large carrot."

Iran can get all the money it needs from oil and other revenue.

These incentives make the EU look like the girlie-men they are.

How can the EU be that coward and that stupid. Do they realize that the Iranian islamic terrorist regime is laughing at them while continuing the work to build nuclear weapons? This is just unreal.

Are you kidding? Given their years of experience, when it comes to creating state-of-the-art appeasement packages the europeeans are lightning fast.

I'd wager that the euroweenies will have at least seven advanced appeasement packages delivered by yet-to-be-developed (but on the drawing board) groveling systems, before Iran gets one of their nukes fired up.

If that is the case then an appeasement package makes no difference in terms of deterrence, but might instead have the positive side effect of improving the day-to-day lives of regular Iranians.

If Europe wants to add regular Iranians to its social support programs and bear the cost that's up to them.

Meanwhile, other means to actually deter Iran from nuclear enrichment ought to be sought - since world leaders are not capable of providing the solution the solution must come from somewhere else.
