When I heard that, I almost fell out of my chair. FINALLY!

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to hire Mexicans to build the fence?

Just a sop.

"Well, I think part of it is that a lot of folks aren't aware of what's already being done"

More aware of what's not being done for 6 years.

"But you've also got to address, I think, some of the basic economic incentives that attract people in the first place: all those folks who want to come here for the jobs that they can find working in the United States for a lot more than they can make in Mexico or someplace in Central America."

Yep, depress American wages to the level of those countries, on the excuse of caring about them. Cheney the Globalist.

Just enforce the border.

fences -- "security barriers" might be a better word for it -- are in fact an important part of the overall plan and need to be part of it.

We complained about Bush not putting men on the border and not building a wall.

Bush is on record as putting men on the border.

Cheney is on record as wanting fences or walls.

Considering the steps the Administration has taken in the past day, and the reaction to it of certain FReepers, this further step toward their position will make them FURIOUS.

We've got some 11 or 12 million illegals in the country. It is a national security problem. It's also an economic problem. If you could round all those folks up tomorrow and put them back over the border, you'd have a big hole in your workforce.

...

I mean, the president pointed out in his speech for example that since we got into office, we have arrested, turned back, sent back across the border some six million illegals.

So which quote of yours is the truth, Mr Vice President? It can't be both.

One of the very useful things the Guard can do is what they did there in San Diego a few years ago when they installed a section of fence there that's turned out to be very effective -- that particular section has been very effective -- basically was built by Guard troops. So there are a lot of things they could do

Rooters:Bush, Cheney Agree to FReepers Demands; FReepers Respond With Call For Election Boycott

"How DARE they STEAL our ideas for troops and a wall!" FReepers say

"When they agreed to move towards our position, we knew we had to leave the party" say some Republicans

The administration knows that they're spinning, of course. It hardly matters. There is nothing that can be done about the destruction of Western civilization through immigration and the destruction of the traditional family.

Why? The simple fact is that the entire Western world needs workers. We don't have enough. Why? Because we have accepted the Nanny State as necessary, because we have accepted the socialist paradigm for human sexuality and the role of the family, and because our low self-interest demands that we suffer as little as possible in our old age.

Immigration is simply something that has to occur in the Western world as it currently is. The Left can't wait for the demographic implosion. The Right tilts at windmills to try to remain in power.

Ya, a hole in our workforce that would quickly be filled by legal Americans.

These people must think we're idiot's!

Heck, it beats sitting out there picking their noses since they won't have any power to actually secure the border.

Well, if that's the case I would hope that would inform the debate and that Congress will consider those kinds of impacts very carefully before they finally pass something.

Kinda scary that the administration doesn't seem to have done an analysis on what kind of numbers the various guest worker plans will bring into our country.

the Democrats, in this case, who don't have any responsibilities or at least aren't willing to take any responsibilities, willing to sit on the sidelines and take potshots.

Good interview. One of the problems is that we are dealing with people (Dems) who are 100% behind illegal immigration that they think benefits them because it adds to their dead and illegal voter pool, and are being supported by a bunch of radical organizations (ANSWER, Code Pink) that organize demonstrations of barely literate and extremely excitable Mexicans, who are then faithfully adored by the Dem "mainstream media."

Most Hispanics would be very happy to be (a) guest workers who go back to their own dysfunctional country with a handful of dollars and open a grocery store in their village; or (b) people who want to learn English, adapt, stay and become rich someday.

There are two problems: one is the Democrat party, which does not want them to do either of the above; the other is Mexico, which also does not want either of the above. I know that, theoretically, we have to court Mexico because they are a border state and should be (but are not) our friend.

Mexico is about to elect a raving lefty, sponsored by Chavez, as its president, because Fox and his supposedly reformist party (PAN) have been so ineffective and in fact have been more anti-American than Salinas and his party (PRI). The problem nobody is addressing is Mexico.

"One of the very useful things the Guard can do is what they did there in San Diego a few years ago when they installed a section of fence..."

The use of the National Guard to build more fences was spoken about in his speech last night:

"At the same time, we are launching the most technologically advanced border security initiative in American history. We will construct high-tech fences in urban corridors, and build new patrol roads and barriers in rural areas. We will employ motion sensors … infrared cameras … and unmanned aerial vehicles to prevent illegal crossings. America has the best technology in the world - and we will ensure that the Border Patrol has the technology they need to do their job and secure our border."

This is what I posted on May 13th:

I have a cousin in the Minute Man organization. He is telling me that the same technology used in prison fences would be used. They are talking about a 16 foot steel fence pitched at an angle to make climbing impossible. On top would be razor wire. Built in would be motion sensors and beams. Other electronic security measures would also be used: infrared sensing cameras, drones with cameras, etc.

And, this post on April 4th:

There is an old saying, "The cow has been let out of the barn." How does the cow get back into the barn? The answer: when she wants to come back in. The most important thing is to secure the barn. We need to erect a physical wall down the entire length of our southern border. Think through history how many countries have built walls. We can make this wall even more secure by high tech. They call it the virtual wall. With it we will know when someone is tunneling under the border or sneaking over in the dark of night. We will know when the border is being crossed like a smoke detector smells smoke. The Berlin Wall had 500 sentry stations. With a virtual wall, the sentries will be beems and drone aircraft loaded with infrared cameras. The only way one can cross the border will be at the official entry/exit points. When someone goes back to Mexico, they will need documentation--birth certificates etc. When someone goes to the United States, they will need an high tech work card that will be required to work. We can engineer other things to control our border. This is really not my expertise. Once we control the flow back and forth across the border, we create incentives for those who are here illegally to go through the naturalization process. One think I can think of, which brings home the cow analogy, is the idea of Social Security and retirement. If we can get the illegals to buy into Social Security, we can fix the Social Security system because of the lack of those paying into it. With Social Security, we can add strings, like the need to fulfill the requirements of naturalization. One incentive for this is that they will benefit from the prospect of retirement back in Mexico where their Social Security check will allow them to live their last days where their dollar goes a long ways. This would mean some sort of dual citizenship arrangement. The cows will go back to the barn when they retire. Those who save their money will also benefit and could retire early in Mexico. More cows will come home. Also, it would benefit to go back to Mexico for medical procedures (as some people have found out). If the only way is through the check points, you would increase the documentation process. One other thing, we need to modernize the naturalization process. This process puts too many people in a Catch-22 where they need to be employed to apply for naturalization and can't work unless their application has been accepted. Too many just don't bother with other bureaucratic complications and stay in the country illegally.

I wonder if I didn't pay may taxes for a few years if I would get amnesty.....I guess some laws are meant to be broken, ignored, flaunted, etc......

When did non-citizens get more rights than Joe-Six-Pack citizens?

I know, I know, I am just another hate monger....sheesh

This is not going to be good enough for some on FR. If the President had said he was going to have built a 12 ft high concrete wall a thousand mile long, you would hear, THAT"S NOT GOOD ENOUGH, it should be 14 feet high and 3000 miles long.

Now I dont doubt for a moment that Cheney shares basically the same position on illegal immigration that Bush does in fact he made it quite clear in the interview. However, is it just me or does Cheney come off much, much less insulting than the president does on this issue?
