Opponent's Ad: Lieberman a Lapdog
NewsMax ^ | 19 May 2006

If every dog has his day, consider the busy role-playing for the canine in Ned Lamont's campaign ad.

Lamont is challenging three-term Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman for the party nomination, criticizing the 2000 vice presidential nominee for backing President Bush on the Iraq war and voting for Republican-backed legislation.

In a 30-second ad, a dog barks at a Lieberman lawn sign, then an announcer intones, "He's been called President George W. Bush's lapdog. Out-of-step with the people of Connecticut. And a tool of the Bush-Cheney administration. Seems like everybody is mad at Joe Lieberman these days."

The dog quiets down as the Lieberman sign suddenly transforms into one for Lamont. "But never fear, good people of Connecticut, the underdog is here," the announcer concludes.

Another commercial shows Lamont sitting on a couch delivering his campaign pitch, ostensibly for a TV commercial. He is soon swarmed by enthusiastic supporters, including Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, whose DailyKos.com political blog is popular among liberal Democrats.

"This is important," Zuniga says. "Look, everybody is here, ready to go. So hurry it up."

The Lamont campaign is airing three ads over three weeks and purchased more than $270,000 of ad time.

In April, Lieberman launched his first television ads in a decade with spots that addressed the war debate head on, telling viewers that while they may disagree on Iraq, "I hope we can still have a dialogue and find common ground on all the issues where we do agree."

Asked about Lamont's ads, Lieberman campaign manager Sean Smith said, "They're cute little spots. But cute never saved a job or stood up to the big oil companies."

Connecticut Democrats hold their nominating convention on Friday. Lieberman is expected to have enough delegate support to win the nomination, but Lamont's backers say he can capture at least 15 percent of the vote to force a primary on Aug. 8.

The Dems have a couple of real woofers in New York and California, so a 'lapdog' shouldn't worry them!

LOL Heaven forbid Leiberman should vote non partisan! Especially when it is on legislation that isn't pro liberal!!

Like the only reason for a Dem to be in office, is to vote liberal!

I just saw the ad on a local station. What a joke. How can a Demo senator with a 90% liberal rating be a lap dog or tool of the Bush-Cheney administration?! It just goes to show what looney lefties the anti war Lamont/Weicker types are. They scare me. Apparently they think America should just roll over and surrender.

If Lamont has negative ads on the air and they're generating press coverage, than he is not a token opponent.

Republicans should watch this race more closely.

Think about the mindset of the Dem party today. The 2000 ticket was Gore/Lieberman.Lieberman is, for all practical purposes, being run out of the party, while Rush todayy said he was fairly confident that Gore was heading towards another run in 2008...Makes you wonder???

IMO Republicans could've taken this seat with Jodi Rell, definitely if Lieberman loses the primary, and likely even if he wins it.

The Lamont race is an indication of how far to the wacko left the Demo party has gone. If I were a GOP strategist I would run ads saying something like "the Democrat party opposes defending America. Even one of their most distinguished senators, Joe Lieberman, is being targeted by the extremist left..."

Connecticut ping!

FWIW... I've seen quite a few Ned Lamont lawn signs and bumper stickers already in the Hartford area. I know it's early, but I'm just a little worried that this moonbat might actually get some traction here in CT...

Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.

I'm no defender of Lieberman, esp. since he votes against banning partial birth abortion. But it is unbelieveable to me that his party has gone to such an extreme that a significant number of Dems are turning against him.

I say the GOP has to get on the offensive and run some edgy ads in order to stave off major defeat this fall. The Iraq war and defending America from terror is one issue on which they can benefit, if they are bold and don't resort to timidity.

Just saw one of those commercials. CT voters can't be dumb enough to vote for that can they??? What a doofus!

Are Republicans running anyone for that seat? Just curious, not that I would mind if Leiberman wins it.
