Person shot dead at US border
Herald Sun ^ | 19 May 2006

Posted on 05/18/2006 10:28:31 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

US authorities shot dead a person apparently trying to illegally cross into the United States from Mexico, police said.

The victim was apparently in a car trying to drive past the San Ysidro border control post in southern California when border patrol officers fired, Gary Hassen, a spokesman for nearby San Diego police, said.

The San Ysidro post, between the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego, is one of the busiest in the world, with 14 million cars and 40 million people crossing into the United States every year.

The shooting comes amid a heated debate in the US over illegal immigration from Mexico.

Would a person who tried to run over a border agent now be called a victim?

I consider it more self defense and law enforcement.

Now the ACLU and Mexico can get that lawsuit fired up. That should go over well.

There are numerous traffic barriers in San Ysidro, so that it would be very difficult to drive past the guard and speed off. There must be more to this story.

This happened around 20 miles south of where I live.
It is the busiest border crossing in the world.
What the Border Patrol did was correct.

If this is the same incident, one of the reports is in error.

This article: authorities shot dead a person apparently trying to illegally cross into the United States from Mexico

Other article: authorities shot and killed the driver of a car headed for Mexico

CNN says that the SUV was suspected of smuggling immigrants. An agent knocked on the window of the SUV, but the driver stepped on the gas and took off, so the agent fired.

I have no idea what the rules of engagement are for Border Patrol, but I can tell you that a local cop around here who shoots at a fleeing car and kills someone will likely lose his job.
