PHOENIX -- An Arizona man is betting that a chance at $1 million will bring more people to the polls.

Dr. Mark Osterloh is a Tucson, Ariz., ophthalmologist and political activist who headed and bankrolled the campaign to get a proposal on the state's November ballot that would give one lucky voter $1 million. Under the proposal, anyone who actually casts a ballot would be eligible.

Osterloh and other supporters submitted petitions Monday bearing what they said were more than 185,000 signatures of registered voters. That's well over the 122,000 required to put a proposed state law on the 2006 ballot.

Osterloh said the money would come from unclaimed lottery winnings.

Elections officials will check the petition signatures to see whether enough are valid to qualify the measure......

If approved I think this would set a bad precedent.

Too late, the dims have been paying people to vote for years.

An additional issue would be the question of who gets the money if the voter is dead, as many dim voters are.

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't make it past the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits any "consideration or value" or whatever for voting. Statistically, a lottery ticket has some value however small.

If a bar can't give you a drink discount because you show up Tuesday evening with your stub, then this shouldn't either.

I would much prefer that informed people vote on issues that they care about, not just show up for a payday. I have a feeling that the type of person that is influenced by this tactic will not vote the way we would prefer.

Well.. one theory might be that the dems might stop bringing voters in by bus so that their odds of winning go up!

Oh geez. That's the last thing we need is to encourage more stupid people to vote.

Bingo. What a great idea - let's draw people out who think they're playing the lottery. I'm sure they'll make an informed decision.

"Voting for dollars!"

People have fought, and died for the right to vote.
Now this voting lottery.

Obnoxious. If someone doesn't care to vote, I'd rather they didn't vote. What we need is more concerned voters, not more stupid voters.

This really is disturbing.

I agree, this is totally stupid. And where does the money come...the taxpayers? If people don't want to vote...then they don't vote.

We don't want those kind of voters. There are already too many uninformed voters going to the polls.

Turning voting into a lottery? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

It saddens me that they have to concider a lure like that to get people to do what is their patriotic responsibility.

exactly. people braved death to vote in Iraq. Meanwhile, we want to bribe people to get off their fat asses.
