WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Justice Department official denied a report on Wednesday that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI in connection with a corruption probe.
ABC News, citing unnamed Justice Department sources, reported that information implicating Hastert was developed from convicted lobbyists now cooperating with the government.
But a Justice Department official told Reuters: "The story is wrong. Hastert is not under investigation."

Looks like the MSM has jumped the gun again.
This news I would prefer to hear. In the middle of a major immigration battle we don't need instability in the House leadership.
geeeze...and we had him all neatly hung out to dry in an earlier thread.
I agree. But who knows if this is true either, haven't seen this but on Reuters.. Sources.. do they actually use them anymore, or do they just grab the nearest passerby and ask them if they think their story is true.
At the moment there's conflicting stories out there. Nothing on Fox or CNN yet so I'm going to believe this one's true.
Drudge just put up a link that goes here, denying an investigation..

I really don't care one way or the other. What I find far more interesting is his strong defense of Jefferson and total silence over Tom DeLay. Perhaps he should just go back to sleep.
Correct. I noticed MSNBC went with the "not under investigation" clarification on the story, as the story was just released by ABC a half-hour before Countdown. If they could have verified it quickly they would have gone with the other. Sounds like everyone heard the ABC version then contacted their own sources who denied it. Doesn't mean anything yet. AP on Yahoo still has the ABC version. So I don't think we'll know for sure until tomorrow.
The link SeaBiscuit just posted is an ABC retract. It looks like they might have jumped the gun before getting all the facts. If we hear anything later tonight from other sources than there's probably something going on...
Okay. I read the story and have heard elsewhere that ABC retracted the story. But, this is Reuters saying the Justice Dept denied an investigation. Is that what you mean? I haven't seen anywhere that ABC retracted it.
Sources.. do they actually use them anymore, or do they just grab the nearest passerby and ask them if they think their story is true.

lol.. They'd be giving trade secrets away if they told ya. It's a very scientific method that they use. (Yeah Right!) ;-)
Check the link at post #8 ..abc news.
There are 2 stories here. One is the MSM's drooling frenzy to get Republicans at all costs. The other is how such a dumbass as Hastert set himself up for this by coming out agianst the FBI investigation of a corrupt member of congress - William Jefferson.
The latter is the real puzzler..
ABC News
"May 24, 2006 -- The following is a transcript from Brian Ross' report on World News Tonight.
The Justice Department formally denies it but law enforcement sources tell ABC News, the congressional bribery investigation has now expanded to include the speaker of the house Dennis Hastert.
(live) Justice Department officials describe the 64-year old Illinois Republican as "very much in the mix" of the corruption investigation."
There is no "retraction" as of yet.
The link from post #8 is from ABC but after looking at it again it's not really a retraction so much as it is giving Hastert an opportunity to deny it.
Thanks. ABC just updated that link you gave AGAIN! lol what to believe??

Seriously, how could someone like him just rush out and step into it? Foolish indeed.
