When hurricane season begins, Texas will be much-better prepared By Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Friday, May 26, 2006

When the 2006 hurricane season begins June 1, Texas believes that it will be much-better prepared for disaster than it was when the state was battered last year.

Texas, which sustained $2 billion in damage from Rita last year, can't stop Mother Nature, but it can minimize her effects on residents.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry recognized that need five years ago. "He laid out a plan to build capabilities at the local level for catastrophic events. . First responders were his number one priority," said Texas Director of Homeland Security Steve McCraw.

That is good news! Wonder how Louisiana is handling their preparations?

And we still have our Governor Jeb on duty, the best hurricane governor in the country.

It's no wonder he's ready to leave office. He works 24/7 when these storms threaten and he gets things done. You can only 'burn your candle on both ends' for about so long before it starts to wear you down.

Don't know about Louisiana but here in Florida they started something new. May 21-31 has been made a sales tax free period to encourage stocking up on hurricane supplies.

I took advantage of it and finally bought a generator. I saved $35 on the sales tax.

This is one purchase I hope I never have to use.

If you don't end up needing it, you may well have friends, relatives and neighbors who do. It's a good investment.

I went a bit silly with mine and took it out into the woods to power a TV for a Seminoles game in the middle of nowhere, just to really try it out.

I highly recommend doing that with the right beer, friends and your own favorite team if you're not an FSU fan.

"Wonder how Louisiana is handling their preparations?"

It will be business as usual and then blame everybody else for their incompetence.

So, why would someone think this would be newsworthy to Pennsylvanians? It's not like they get many Cat 5 hurricanes hitting the Poconos.

As for this whizbang command center in Austin, that may be very impressive but what's really needed are a few larger freeways and for more gas stations to stay open during the evacuation process.

i cover national issues...and oh by the way the poconos are no where near pittsburgh, and Texas Oil and Gas is embedded in the SOC center in Austin to expedite distributing Gas during an evacuation and i think that your governor (Perry) is working on legislation to expand your highways...

How is Louisiana making their preparations?

Their high profiled representatives are storing their money in tupperware containers in their freezers. Otherwise, known as "COLD Cash"!
