When hurricane season begins, Texas will be much-better prepared By Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Friday, May 26, 2006
When the 2006 hurricane season begins June 1, Texas believes that it will be much-better prepared for disaster than it was when the state was battered last year.
Texas, which sustained $2 billion in damage from Rita last year, can't stop Mother Nature, but it can minimize her effects on residents.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry recognized that need five years ago. "He laid out a plan to build capabilities at the local level for catastrophic events. . First responders were his number one priority," said Texas Director of Homeland Security Steve McCraw.

That is good news! Wonder how Louisiana is handling their preparations?
It's no wonder he's ready to leave office. He works 24/7 when these storms threaten and he gets things done. You can only 'burn your candle on both ends' for about so long before it starts to wear you down.
Don't know about Louisiana but here in Florida they started something new. May 21-31 has been made a sales tax free period to encourage stocking up on hurricane supplies.

As for this whizbang command center in Austin, that may be very impressive but what's really needed are a few larger freeways and for more gas stations to stay open during the evacuation process.
i cover national issues...and oh by the way the poconos are no where near pittsburgh, and Texas Oil and Gas is embedded in the SOC center in Austin to expedite distributing Gas during an evacuation and i think that your governor (Perry) is working on legislation to expand your highways...
Their high profiled representatives are storing their money in tupperware containers in their freezers. Otherwise, known as "COLD Cash"!
