NEW BEDFORD — Bernadette DePina, the mother of reputed gang member and accused killer David "Crunchy" DePina II, was found shot to death in her bedroom yesterday, raising fears of gang retaliation, sources said. Mr. DePina, 23, is charged with a shooting that killed a reputed gang rival Sunday.
Mayor Scott W. Lang wouldn't specifically say he believed Ms. DePina's murder was gang-related, but community activists who gathered near Ms. DePina's home yesterday said they were worried it was retaliation. During a press conference, the mayor asked New Bedford to "take a step back" and later visited troubled spots in the city with other officials.

Everything about Mrs. DePina personally is admirable, but she just couldn't get her son straightened out in time. It happens.....
Now she is the 2nd homicide victim in that county for 2006, while her son is in jail for the shooting of the 1st homicide victim this year. I thought innocent mothers were off-limits for killing, and this lady was shot dead in her bedroom. Something tells me this will get a lot worse after Mrs. DePina's murder, since it would appear that it's open season on even mamacitas.
