Unfortunately, you are correct. What everyone forgets is that all non-Islamic totalitarian societies weren't always that way. Russia had a history before it's years under the Iron Curtain, Germany had a form of governance quite different than the Nazis before the rise of Hitler, and Rome had a Senate before it had Caligula.

Just because we started out as a representative republic, doesn't mean we can't end up as something very different. But as you say - who cares these days? The fire is very close to going out.
