Destroying a great national institution
US News ^ | 5/24/06 | Michael Barone

If you want to understand the disastrous decline of the New York Times in recent years, a good place to start is this National Review Online "Media Blog" post on a commencement speech given by Times publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. Stephen Spruiell of "Media Blog" links to the text of Sulzberger's speech, so you can read the whole thing if you want. What struck me about the quoted excerpts was their stupidity. This does not seem to be a very smart man. Example:

"It wasn't supposed to be this way," Sulzberger said. "You weren't supposed to be graduating in an America fighting a misbegotten war in a foreign land. You weren't supposed to be graduating into a world where we are still fighting for fundamental human rights, be it the rights of immigrants to start a new life, the right of gays to marry, or the rights of women to choose."

"A misbegotten war in a foreign land"—that's a reference evidently to the liberation of 25 million people from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein and the installation of democracy and freedom. "The rights of immigrants to start a new life"—as the president is pushing successfully in the Senate for a law that provides for legalization of illegal immigrants. "The rights of women to choose"—as we continue to have every year more than 1 million legal abortions—a word that Sulzberger evidently can't bring himself to utter, preferring instead to use the euphemism favored by one side in the argument over this issue.

For many years, the New York Times has been regarded as the newspaper of record that presents, in the words of its slogan, "all the news that's fit to print." Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. seems to have launched it on a different course, as a partisan journal that shapes the news to advance the ideological goals of its publisher, editors, and reporters. Did his predecessors as publisher—his father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather—ever give public speeches so full of partisan venom? I doubt it. By doing so, he sends yet another signal to the newsroom about the kind of newspaper he wants.

And the collapse of the New York TERRORIST Times is a surprise to anyone?  The "Attack America" paper of record should die a horrible death!

Let's not forget the WELL-DOCUMENTED, VERIFIABLE PLAN Democrats published, BEFORE the 2004 Elections, to WORK WITH THE MEDIA TO LIE TO THE PUBLIC AND ENGAGE IN WIDESPREAD MANIPULATION AND PROPAGANDA TO ATTACK AMERICA AND UNDERMINE BUSH!

Here is the original version of the story, in the WAYBACKMACHINE even though it has LONG been removed from the web site!

USA Today Reporter a (D) Operative - Phone Company Demands Retraction of NSA LIE

Why the NSA STORY is CRUCIAL to the TREASONOUS MEDIA

Why the Media Doesn't See its TREASON

Media miscues seem bulging with left-wing bias (The never ending media propaganda on behalf of the DNC)

The Never Ending DNC Media Propaganda Machine (Exposing DNC media propaganda where it hides)

IMHO the information content of most newspapers has decreased sharply in the last, say 20 years. I lay it to the poor performance of our educational system (both public and private). The result being that the persons owning and the persons writing for the newspapers do not have an education that gives them a world perspective.

A secondary problem is the injection of propaganda into the act of reporting on the news. As extremely bright and well educated person could slip it in unobtrusively, but the present day hacks lay in on with a heavy hand.

Consequently, readers are leaving the MSP in droves.

You also have to credit the rise of "Journalism" schools and the leftist takeover of the academy after the Vietnam war.

The people running this newspaper, many of the universities and much of the tv news, are the "kids" who were burning down Columbia University and others in the late 60's. They were rude, loud, and full of themselves. NOTHING has changed.

End of journalism as we have come to abhor it

Weak logic, prejudices, and outright lies

Who knows, maybe the return of, shall I shudder

A Nobel Tradition of,
the Pursuit,
Logical Reasoning,
and the Reporting of
The Truth

"all the news that's fit to print."

"all the news that's not fit to print," would be more appropriate.

Pinch Sulzberger, that vicious little queer traitor, is getting ready to get another well-deserved black eye.

Apologize for your own evil existence, Pinchy Boy. Not to mention your disasterous stewardship of the NY Times, whose stock price is down 67% in one of the great boom stock markets in history.

I finally wised up and cancelled my subscription to the local paper, which is owned by The Whore. I recently received an invitation to subscribe to the NYT. In their postage paid envelope, I replied..."If you were the last newspaper on earth...NO WAY!!!"

Our local paper, The Tuscaloosa News, is also owned by the NYT. They sometimes call and ask if we're interested in subscribing, and I always say no and tell them why.

Sulzberger Jr. is a trembling weakling, the quintessential empty suit. His paper is in glide mode, kept aloft only on the fast dissipating updrafts of past reputation. A nosedive into oblivion is just over the horizon.
