Brazen daylight smuggling pours illegals into U.S.

NOGALES, Mexico — One by one, men and women crawled on their knees and bellies across the hot desert sand about 100 yards from where rumbling tractor-trailer rigs crossed from Mexico into Arizona.

In temperatures near 100 degrees, they looked like they were on a military reconnaissance mission, but their tattered clothing said these weren't soldiers. They were trying to make their way from southern Mexico to the United States.

President Bush and Congress have vowed to seal America's porous border with thousands of National Guard troops, miles of fences, surveillance cameras and aerial drones.

But in the Mariposa Canyon, those plans face a reality check.

In groups of 10 to 16, men, women and children routinely cross the border, led by brazen smugglers called polleros. It happens in broad daylight, under a blazing sun at high noon, around and through the 12-foot-high wall that Uncle Sam erected in the late 1990s.

The scene unfolds under the noses of Customs and Border Patrol agents. Once across, the immigrants dash to a warehouse parking lot, where a ride takes them to a safehouse in the Arizona border town of Nogales.

POEM - Illegal Immigrants

I cross ocean,
poor and broke,

Take bus,
see employment folk.

Nice man
treat me good in there,
Say I need
go see Welfare.

Welfare say,
"You come no more,

We send cash
right to your door."

Welfare checks,
they make you wealthy,

Medicaid
it keep you healthy!

By and by,
Got plenty money,

Thanks to you,
TAXPAYER dummy.

Write to friends
in motherland,

Tell them
'come, fast as you can'

They come in turbans
and Ford trucks,

I buy big house
with welfare bucks.

They come here,
we live together,

More welfare checks,
it gets better!

Fourteen families,
they moving in,

But neighbor's patience
wearing thin.

Finally, white guy
moves away,
..
I buy his house,
and then I say,

"Find more aliens
for house to rent."

In my yard
I put a tent.

Send for family
they just trash,
...
But they, too,
draw welfare cash!

Everything is
very good,
Soon we own
whole neighborhood.

We have hobby
it called breeding,

Welfare pay
for baby feeding.

Kids need dentist?
Wife need pills?

We get free!
We got no bills!

TAXPAYER crazy!
He pay all year,
To keep welfare
running here.

We think Canada/America
darn good place!
Too darn good
for white man race.

If they no like us,
they can scram,
Got lots of room
in Pakistan

& Mexico.

Since entering the country without permission is ILLEGAL, all illegal immigrants are, by definition, criminals.

So apparently the Bush administration - and most of Congress - has no interest in capturing and stopping criminals who are invading the country. That's not good a good attitude for any country to take.

Hasn't the President (and Rumsfeld, and others) expressed concern about a nuclear weapon being smuggled into the US? That's why there's a security beef-up on the northern border, right? Well, why bother if Bush & Congress are going to leave a huge swinging door open in the south?

Now they're working on a new shamnesty package. I guess there's still time before November to get the old "Mission Accomplished" banner out of storage for a photo-op on the Mexican border ...

:-(

The Border Patrol is so corrupt in the Nogales region that the organization is a standing joke. Barbers, gas station operators, grocery clerks, and the drunk on the street can tell you who to pay off to cross the border into the USA. This is the untold story of the whole rotten mess.

...all illegal immigrants are, by definition, criminals.

But, unfortunately, not felons.

The U.S. Border Patrol, or the Mexican Border patrol? If it's our guys, I want them in jail, NOW!

n turn, the polleros led groups of Mexicans down a trash-covered ravine to the 12-foot-high metal fence that guards the border. It's routinely blow-torched or cut to make space for passage.

The smugglers have nothing but contempt for us and will continue to destroy any fence until we back up our resolve with bullets.

if we'd enforce our border like we did the DMZ in Korea, we'd have no issues.

Minefields are cheap and effective.

Agreed. I expect the anti-violence brigades to show up any minute now to chastize or ban us.

And I'd care as much as 95% of the Senate cares about our security.

"If the U.S. doesn't want illegal workers, why are companies coming here to contract them," he asked, telling of recruiters who come through his region south of Mexico City with buses. They offer to take people across to waiting jobs, he said. The cost of the illicit transit would be deducted from their pay.

I'd really like to know who these companies are.

The reason the BP is increasingly corrupt is simple. Growing frustration with not being allowed to do the job they were hired to do; along with increasing violence toward them has been driving the best officers to either quit, or transfer to lower traffic areas or other government agencies. Many officers remaining in high traffic areas with little to no support become corrupt.

I have known many BP officers, and one of my family members started his government career in the BP. When hired to do the job the hiring process is tough, many wash out for one reason or another at the academy. The BP officers who graduate begin their career with an attitude that they are there to do a job and they are eager to do it. As time goes by and they realize they may not be allowed to do their job, they find that politics is a major thing. The goals at the top of the food chain usually do not mesh with realities at the bottom. Many find themselves in trouble for actions they see as part of their job, (enforcing immigration laws) the other issue is the fact that they go to great lengths to catch illegals and smugglers only to see them released to repeat their crimes over and over. BP officers often catch the same illegals and coyotes within days of the last apprehension. Officers are under increasing attack by illegals and smugglers, they are rammed and ran down with vehicles, pelted with large rocks and shot at regularly in the hot spots. When they are assaulted or shot at they are told to avoid confrontation and even to hide, which makes doing their job difficult if not impossible. They are also told to not speak to the public or media about what is really going on and at the same time they see media reports and higher ranking BP telling the public that issues are not real or blown out of proportion.

I am not surprised when I hear of corrupt BP, I am surprised we are able to keep any decent officers at all in today's climate on the border issues.

You could not have been more correct. A gung ho attitude turns to cynicism is a hurry when you are told not to do your job. And cynicism leads to corruption. When a Douglas BP agent suggested that all illegal border crossers be fingerprinted and then those with fingerprints on file never be allowed US citizenship under any circumstance (the same would hold true for a wife/husband and children) the BP leadership responded like scalded cats. As you can imagine the agent soon left for a more honest job.
