PONCE (AP) – National Weather Service [PR/USVI Forecast Office] Director Israel Matos did not rule out Tuesday that some of the tropical waves that have already formed in the Atlantic Ocean will turn into the first tropical storm, which would carry the name of Alberto.

"In 1999, we had several storms when the season began that developed in the Caribbean; this year, it is possible to have now in June the first tropical storm," he said.

The official said that last year, a tropical storm formed in June in the Gulf of Mexico.

Matos specified that since 1995, the early cyclonic activity in the season has been greater than in previous years.

He added that last year, there were not many cyclonic events to the east of Puerto Rico and that the tropical waves became storms in the Western Caribbean.

Protecting Your Home

Hurricanes, which are powered by the heat from the sea, can be of great damage to public buildings, businesses, homes, and general infrastructure by breaking windows and doors, allowing high winds and rain inside the house.

Fortunately, there are a variety of measures that can de taken to reduce your vulnerability to hurricane hazards such as the use of storm shutters, plywood panels, and hurricane straps to hold a structure to its walls and foundation.

Hurricane protection can involve a variety of changes to your house or property, which can vary in complexity and cost. Storm shutters can cost from $10 to $25 per square foot depending on style, while a 4’ x 8’ plywood panel can cost about $22.00 to $26.00.

When protecting your home keep in mind the following tips:

Consider using permanent storm shutters if you live in an area where you need to act quickly to protect your windows.

If you decide to use temporary covers, cut the plywood and drill holes for screws or lag bolts in each cover and in the wall around each window. The screws should be long enough to penetrate the wall studs around the window, not just the siding or wall covering.

Don’t wait until the last minute to make the covers. Make them now and store them together with the screws or lag bolts in a place where they are accessible. Use a numbering system that shows which cover goes in which window.

Rather than a panic thread (or an immigration thread), perhaps this could be a preparedness thread:

First Aid Kit

It is possible to suffer from scrapes, stings, and even broken bones before, during, and after a hurricane. To be prepared, make sure you have some basic first-aid products handy.

Hydrocortisone cream
Antibiotic cream
Rubbing alcohol
Anti-itch lotion
Sterile gauze
Bandages
Butterfly bandages
Antiseptic cloths or sponges
Waterproof adhesive tape
Tweezers
Surgical scissors
Aloe Vera based gel
Acetaminophen
Ibuprofen
Oral electrolyte solution
Thermometer
Cold Pads
Heating Pads

Get the impression that the AP and the rest of the MSM want another Katrina? I mean, really, they are in effect reporting no storms as news. Today in the news, nothing has happened.
