A cartoon by Jack Higgins in Tuesday's Chicago Sun-Times incorporated inaccurate imagery to make a statement about the allegations that U.S. Marines killed Iraqi civilians in Haditha. Jack Higgins and the Sun-Times deeply regret the mistake and apologize to the U.S. servicemen, especially those in the Marine Corps, and to our readers who were understandably offended by the cartoon. Higgins, in doing Web research on the Haditha story, searched the Internet for images. A Yahoo search engine displayed a number of photos, one of which was labeled "IraqBodi...rd.jpg." Clicking on that image took Higgins to the MSNBC/Newsweek site. On his screen then was the original Yahoo search preview image and under it a Newsweek page with a small image of the magazine's current cover with the headline "The Haditha Question." Higgins made the erroneous assumption that the image in the photo preview was a photograph of victims of the killings that unproven allegations say were committed by U.S. Marines. Further scrolling down the page would have produced another image of this photo with a caption that clearly identities the dead as victims of Iraqi insurgents. The caption reads, "Insurgents in Haditha executed 19 Shiite fishermen and National Guardsmen in a sports stadium." Again, Higgins and the editors of the Sun-Times apologize for this egregious error.

As Forrest Gump's Mother always said... "stupid is as stupid does"
"Higgins made the erroneous assumption that the image in the photo preview was a photograph of victims of the killings that unproven allegations say were committed by U.S. Marines."
Even though the accusations are "unproven," Higgens and the Tribune were ready to print them. Typical.
Let me guess. The cartoon appeared on page A-2, while the correction/apology was lost on page F-18.

It's not a question of brains... they know exactly what they're putting out on the street. I'm surprised they apoligized.
You nailed it. This was intentional, the damage is done; the undermining of the war, our president and military, and then place an apology in a less prominent location. This is an old trick of the OLD MEDIA. Don't give the reporters/editors credit for this much stupidity--these snakes are not stupid as they would have the public believe.
I saw this cartoon on the news last night. They could apologize every which way till Sunday, but the cats out of the bag and they can't take it back. It was truly disgusting. You have to be awfully twisted to even submit something like that to print. He deserves to have his a$$ stomped. I wish we could go back to when you were called on your lies and you actually had to pay the price for them.
The papers/stations could care less--They're pushing an agenda.
The key is to get to the purchasers of advertising space/time. I've called several local businesses lately to ask why they support the trashing our brave troops (we're a military town, for Pete's sake) and the seditious comments of al-Murtha, among other things.
At first, they think I'm crazy. I then point out the front page/editorial comments of our local cat-box liner, and direct them to their advertisment. Finally, I assert that, given their negative sentiment toward the greatest country on this earth, that neither I, nor my exceedingly large extended family, will be doing business with them anytime soon.
Maybe I am unhinged; but I do believe one person can make a difference.
Please refer to Durbin by his full name: Turban Durbin.
It's so much fun to call him by his correct name.
Hey, don't be discouraged. I boycott stuff all the time and I let the companies know about it. They have to feel the sting if enough people join. The companies want you to think that you are the only complainer and your business is irrelevant. We must stand for something or fall for whatever. It is called doing the right and honorable thing.
Oh, I'm not discouraged at all. I tell my sons it's leading by example.
