N.C. in the running for college based on teachings of Ayn Rand

OXFORD, N.C. --A college based on the teachings of philosopher-author Ayn Rand might come to Oxford -- if Maine doesn't get it first.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the ruling body for the state's public universities, has received a request for the establishment of Founders College in Oxford. The board has to approve applications for private colleges in the state.

Two Duke University professors, Gary Hull and Eric Daniels, are involved with the College of Rational Education Inc., which would operate Founders College under Rand's principles. The author of "Atlas Shrugged" emphasized the rights of the individual and laissez-faire capitalism.

Something about combining "two Duke University professors" with "the rights of the individual and laissez-faire capitalism" doesn't quite jibe to me. If they're on the up and up, how on earth did these two manage to sneak past the Marxist gatekeepers?

Whose idea was it not to name the school Patrick Henry University?

"University of North Carolina Board of Governors ... has received a request for the establishment of Founders College in Oxford."

Do I smell an outright swindle at work?

Maybe North Carolina could really use a new monorail system. ALL cities are going to have monorails in place by the year 2020.....

Oxford college group eyes Maine

By WILLIAM F. WEST, The Herald-Sun
June 12, 2006 9:35 pm

OXFORD -- A small group that includes a pair of Duke University teachers still is seeking to start a college in Oxford, but also is trying to persuade officials in Maine to let them open for business at a $26.4 million coastline site.

Founders College, which has submitted papers with the UNC Board of Governors for permission to locate at Oxford, also apparently is eyeing a more than 380-acre Maine mountainside retreat, Point Lookout, which is on the upscale Christie's Great Estates list.

A Maine committee assigned to review applications for colleges and universities is set to meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in that state's capital city of Augusta.

Plans include looking at a request from Founders College, said Lorie Costigan, editor of VillageSoup Times, a Maine publication closely following the story there.

The committee's job is to advise Maine's full Board of Education to vote yes or no. But the big issue has been whether the press and public are going to be allowed to view the process.

Costigan told The Herald-Sun the meeting is going to be open, this after first being told to the contrary by a Maine education official, Harry Osgood.

VillageSoup Times, through open records requests, also discovered that a Maine economic development official had been e-mailing Maine education officials, asking why they were not keeping things hush-hush, at the request of Founders College. Maine officials, in other published reports since then, have denied implications of a cover-up.

VillageSoup Times reported that one possible reason for secrecy is the lack of public records showing whether Founders College can acquire Point Lookout. Founders College has instead presented financial scenarios.

Point Lookout is located along U.S. 1 northeast of Augusta and near a community called Northport. The property was owned and developed by MBNA, a former credit card giant that earlier in the year sold out to Bank of America.

The grounds include eight main buildings and 106 log cabins, with the crown jewel being a conference center with breathtaking views over the islands of Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

In Oxford, stories about a college being established made the rounds for weeks. But local officials would not confirm anything.

Some details surfaced in Oxford last month, when Mayor Al Woodlief brought up the subject with Granville Economic Development Director Leon Turner at an Oxford City Commission meeting.

Michelle Howard-Vital also told The Herald-Sun that a site visit is set for July 26 in Oxford. Howard-Vital is associate vice president of academic affairs for UNC General Administration. She assists the UNC Board of Governors and reports to UNC system President Erskine Bowles.

The UNC board is charged with approving applications of private institutions in North Carolina. Howard-Vital said plans are for her and a team of experts to meet with Founders College representatives and tour a yet-to-be disclosed location.

Turner said the meeting would be at his office.

"We're delighted to see this move forward," he said.

The Founders College representative whom Howard-Vital has been in contact with is Eric Daniels, a visiting assistant professor at Duke.

The College of Rational Education Inc. would operate Founders College. The College of Rational Education's agent is Gary Hull, according to records with the N.C. Secretary of State's Office.

Daniels and Hull have next-door offices at Duke's Trent Hall. Neither was there when a reporter stopped by Monday.

Daniels so far has declined comment. Repeated attempts to reach Hull have been unsuccessful.

Hull's wife, who answered the phone at the Hull home last week, said she believed her husband would unlikely be speaking to anyone with the news media.

"He's very gun-shy as far as press goes these days," she said.

But VillageSoup Times obtained brief comments from Hull saying that, while he and his associates are considering North Carolina and possibly Virginia, "We want Maine."

A document on file with the N.C. Secretary of State's Office shows The College of Rational Education would apply the principles of the late Ayn Rand, the philosopher championed by many for her stance for individual rights and less government.

Daniels and Hull are speakers and writers at the Ayn Rand Institute, a nonprofit organization in the southern California city of Irvine.

In Durham, Daniels is a postdoctoral fellow and research associate at Duke University's Program on Values and Ethics in the Marketplace. Hull is the program's director.

In late 2002, the program received a $1 million contribution from the charitable foundation of BB&T Bank, which is based in Winston-Salem.

BB&T's foundation donated $500,000 in 1999 and reportedly has made donations to other educational institutions in the Tar Heel state, including to UNC. And a Web site supportive of Rand's philosophy provides a link to BB&T's site.

If Founders College does become a reality, Hull would be chief executive officer and chairman while Daniels would be the secretary, papers filed with the N.C. Secretary of State's Office show.

The papers also show who would serve with Hull on the college's board of directors.

The president and treasurer would be Tedd Potts, identified in news reports as president of Heartland Chevrolet in the Kansas City, Mo., area, and as an organizer of Ayn Rand meetings.

The vice president of operations and strategic planning would be Tamara K. Fuller, of Columbia, Md., located near Baltimore. She is listed as a director of Howard Bank, also near Baltimore.

The bank's Web site also identifies Fuller as a principal and co-owner of a management consulting firm and chairman and chief executive officer of a real estate leasing and management firm.

Radio programs have touted her as an expert in high-end rental properties and improving distressed properties in emerging neighborhoods.

The N.C. Secretary of State's Office also lists the incorporating person for The College of Rational Education as Michael V. Conger, an attorney from Kansas City, Mo.

Conger is listed on the Web as being with the law firm of Polsinelli Shalton Welte Suelthaus, and his expertise is listed as employee pensions, benefits and compensation.

Potts, Fuller and Conger could not be reached for comment.

"In late 2002, the program received a $1 million contribution from the charitable foundation of BB&T Bank, which is based in Winston-Salem."

Well, maybe this is legitimate. BB&T puts it's money where it's mouth is, coming out forcefully in opposition to Kelo. I believe they even refuse to lend in areas that allow such (mis)use of eminent domain.

It started for that purpose, however, and that's all I really know about it. It's not far from me here in NoVa, but it doesn't seem to get much attention.
