I remember visiting relatives in Poland when I was a kid. Should they (or we) happen to say something unflattering about the PTB, they never knew which neighbors would snitch. In the government assigned "apartments" the walls had ears. Or at least the fear of such was sufficient. Sometimes people with loose tongues would simply disappear.

And yet they still felt more sorry for the Russians.
