Call it what ever you want, there will be no bill if we don`t give a little. Of course, some folks will be very happy to keep this issue alive till 08, the country be damned.

We can`t end this till we secure the border and there needs to be new laws with funding to make that happen. That`s the real world, sports fans.

The recent victory "indicates exactly where the American people stand on this" IN ONE DISTRICT. I do believe this to be the case overall too. Not sure what your other reference is to.

Funding for border control can be included in any bill as an amendment and has been done a million times. We don't need the McCain/Kennedy amnesty scam to get that done.

Lets see, this poll was taken for the Wall Street Journal a newspaper dedicated to big business.

Most big business want cheap labor.

Well this is one conservative that has not changed his opinion of the worst piece of legislation S2611 to come out of the Senate in years.

Right. Strange how I never run across any Americans who back Bush on immigration. Everyone I talk to wants a wall and deportation yesterday. But then I'm not a member of the Chamber of Commerce or have friends who own carpet mills.

To effectively close the borders, there will have to be a serious commitment not only to build barriers, but to use Border Patrol personnel effectively. Even the most aggressive proposal calls for building physical barriers for about one-third of the U.S.-Mexico border. Barriers can be penetrated, especially when the Mexican government is sympathetic to immigration and elements of that government, including Mexican Army units, are in the thrall of the drug lords. On a number of occasions, Mexican army patrols have been sighted several miles within American territory protecting narcotics shipments going into our interior. Local and state police and the Border Patrol lack the firepower to take on machine guns and armored vehicles.

What is to prevent the Mexican authorities from blowing up sections of the wall? It would have to be an American President and Administration threatening retaliation if they should do such a thing. Since there have been denials of actual Mexican military incursions onto American soil by Administration officials, despite numerous eyewitness accounts of these incursions, I fear all we would get is a tepid response, with both Fox and Bush blaming gangsters who went to the trouble of getting military uniforms and gear.

The second issue is whether the Border Patrol is used effectively. Business interests, particularly agribusiness, construction, and the travel industry, want a continued supply of cheap labor. They are influential in the "country club" wing of the GOP. When public interest fades regarding this issue, they will "come out of the closet" and put pressure on the Administration to become lax in enforcement. In addition, the usual liberal network of "public interest" and "civil liberties" groups will continue to lobby for the illegals. Their whining will receive favorable play in the MSM, and the Administration, many of whose senior officials seem mentally locked into the days when the media dinosaurs ruled the earth, will back down from vigorous enforcement as soon as CBS and The Washington Post whine loudly enough.

Then there is the issue of the existing illegal population. Even if we could get Administration commitment to effective border enforcement, there are clear political ramifications for placing most of the existing illegals on a path to citizenship. The plans, even Congressman Pence's plan, provide such a path. That path will lead to an effective liberal Democrat majority nationally and the loss of the Southwest, and possibly Georgia and Florida as well, to the Left, as happened with California.

The only effective way to deal with the illegal problem is to increase the number of true conservatives (committed to shrinking government power, the original intent of the Constitution, and national sovereignty) to Congress and to elect a true conservative, rather than a "compassionate" one, to the White House in two years. The status quo of poorly controlled immigration is bad enough, but at least there is no effect on the electorate. The proposals that offer some path to citizenship will have the effect of bringing liberals to political power for decades. You can kiss goodbye to the right to keep and bear arms, the remaining private sector in medical care, freedom of speech on the Internet and talk radio, prohibition of homosexual unions, and the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade, among other items.

OK, you win. Your plan is the best and the borders will be secure. We can all relax now. Thanks for pointing out that the problem was so easy to solve.

Our sovereignty is not a negotiable topic/issue.

Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand how valuable our sovereignty is and therefore does not deserve to be a part of the debate.

We decide who comes and when,we decide who stays and we decide who leaves and when.

That right is not a topic open for debate.

Pence said (on Hugh Hewitt) they have to leave, get the card, and it's only good for a specified time. At least they will be documented. There is no way all 12 million are being deported anyway.

So you don`t want things to change. Must be true cause unless there is so give on all sides, the illegals are going to win and there will be no bill.
Who is giving up any sovereignty by the way?

Senators voted based on the desires of THEIR constituents....

Of the 1/3 (33) Senators up for re-election that are Republican, yes, I'd say they voted their constituents moods. In many cases these were from Southern states and were a majority of NO votes on the immigration bill. The other Republican Senators are RINOs from blue or blue-leaning states and voted yes. And, of course, the Democrat Senators (except Byrd whose state constituents wanted NO) mostly voted to enroll new VOTERS.

I'm not an anti-Bush ranter that is harping on immigration because I hate him. I've supported him on everything BUT this. He's wrong on it and I've told my Congressman not to give an inch in conference on the bill.

You can choose to opine the pitfalls of standing firm on immigration, you've got a slim chance your prognosis would be right. My prognosis, if these illegals get what they want is a far more dire situation for this country for a very, very long time. In that future, the entitlements load on this country is so great, all personal income wealth has been confiscated, taxed or redistributed 'equitably.'

The problem is easy enough to solve if those currently in power within the executive branch, who already have plenty of laws at their disposal decide they want to. It's up to them to demand more funds if needed. The House bill added to that ability but it isn't absolutely necessary.

Granting amnesty to illegals on the other hand does nothing to help fix the crisis and you've yet to tell us how it does.

"You appear to be taking the Lindsey Graham position that we must have something, anything no matter how destructive to the country as the Senate bill is otherwise conservatives will punish the House in November."

What? How do you get that from my position that all polls are bogus?

So, we build a wall, and the Mexicans or anybody else blows a hole in, you don`t think this President would respond? Gee, there might be a few folks in Iraq and Afghanistan that hold a different view.

I want things to change allright, I want the feds to perform one of the few functions they are expressly granted in the Constitution. Protect our borders and enforce our laws. They could do both, today, without ANY additional legislation yet they refuse.

Anyone who advocates a comprehensive bill that allows illegals to stay over sealing the borders first and enforcing existing laws is advocating giving away our sovereignty.
