PUSHING FOR ARMAGEDDON - Inside Iran's New Power Struggle

N.Y. Post

Amir Taheri

June 16, 2006

-excerpt-

The theological division among Shi'ites concerns a simple question: What should believers do while the Imam is absent? One doctrine, known as Intizar (waiting) maintains that the best that believers can do is to be patient and wait until the Imam decides to return. Followers of that doctrine are known as Muntazeris (Those Who Wait).

That doctrine is opposed by another known as Ta'ajil (To hasten). Its adepts believe that believers should act to hasten the coming of the Mahdi. The Ta'ajilis (Hasteners) insist that believers should seek to unite the entire Islamic ummah and lead it into battle against the "Infidel," with the view of provoking a final showdown for global domination in the hope that, when the crunch comes, the Hidden Imam will return to ensure the victory of the Only Truth.

"...the overwhelming majority of Shi'ites in Iran have subscribed to the doctrine of Patient Waiting. The new elite, however, is decidedly seduced by the doctrine of Hastening the Return. President Ahmadinejad openly claims that the aim of his government's actions is to hasten the coming of the Mahdi.

The Hasteners have put together a powerful coalition backed by large segments of the military and security services. This includes the Fedayeen (self-sacrificers) of Islam, the Coalition of Islamic Associations, the Hezbollah (Party of Allah) and the United Front of the Followers of the Imam."

"... the current showdown between the Islamic Republic and the United Nations over the nuclear issue assumes special significance. If the major powers are perceived to be backing down, the Hasteners would be able to claim victory and use it as a springboard for winning the Assembly of Experts and, later, evicting Khamenei."

The hojatieh or "hasteners" as Taheri describes them, cannot be negotiated with. Period.
If Mesbah Yazdi (Ahmadinejad's mentor) takes over Supreme Leader position from Khamenei, we will have absolutely no choice but to use force to get rid of him and any nuclear material or dangerous facilities.

Interesting that this assembly election is in November.

With goons being already being sent out to hastle with the old guard, and so much at stake, the "hasteners" will have no problem going furthur with threats and killings to stop Meshkini, Rafsanjani, and their ilk.

This is exactly what makes Iran so dangerous. People laugh at Ahmadinejad (sp) and call him a nut but he's not nuts...his rhetoric and actions so far have been perfectly logical and rational given his worldview. And when someone has a deeply held religious belief that an all out world wide war will hasten the return of their 'messiah' and that same someone goes about making inflammatory speeches all the while semi-secretly building a nuclear arsenal...that same someone should be taken very seriously and dealt with harshly. And soon.

Yes, the "hasteners" can be off'ed, but sounds like its the "hasteners" more likely to do the off'ing, assuming its done within Iran. Of course, from the outside (READ: The West), the off'ing of the hasteners could be hastened.

You're right. It's his "worldview" that's nuts. Suicidal religious leaders are a step beyond Stalin, Hitler, Kim Jung-il, etc. He, his mentor and followers are far too dangerous to be allowed to rule a country.
They will be stopped. I just wish we'd stop them now.

The 'good' thing, is that there are very few "hasteners". If Yazdi and Ahmadinejad were taken out of the picture, the movement, politically, would collapse.
Of course, that would still leave the current murdering mullahs, and we can't allow them to stay in power either.

btw - there have been rumors for a while that Khamenei is dying of cancer. His death would necessitate meetings sooner than November.

There is no choice [except for the timing] even at present time.

Every nut is perfectly logical in that nut's frame of reference. Human beings do not function as "I have two choices - A and B. A is better for me, but I will do B". No, they do B because they perceive B as better - easier, for example, or more familiar.

The major powers have no easy options here. But that has been the case in Iran since the mullahs swept to power in 1979.

Thanks again Jimmy.

I was thinking of that too. No wonder there's a movement in Iran that recognizes "W" as "the Mahdi" ~ noting that the "hasteners" may well have gotten what they wanted, just not the way they wanted it.

I don't think this group see the Mahdi as a Messiah, rather, the Mahdi comes first to reform and purify Islam, then Jesus comes as the Messiah.

None of this is hard and fast since the prophecies exist separate and apart from traditional Islamic sacred texts, commentaries, histories or laws.

We should help the Iranians by supporting the "W" as Mahdi dichotomy.
