Yes, his popularity translated in to 49% of the popular vote... the electoral system saved his @ss!

A good economy, a lackluster campaign by Dole, and continued meddling by Ross Perot led to Clinton winning a second term.

Bob Dole... What a mistake that was.

OTOH, his second term led to Monica and "that depends on what the meaning of is is" and the beginning of Americans taking notice of what their leaders do and say.

Agreed. I war hero RINO was not the bridge to the 21st Century. The Perot wishful thinkers did not help.

I remember thinking that at the time. But he, and many other Republicans, believed strongly that anybody, ANYBODY could defeat Clinton in '96, and as Dole announced to the RNC, it was "his turn." Lessons learned: Don't count your eggs before they're in the pudding, and don't let that kind of arrogance submarine us in the future.
