House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 (Utah GOP Exec. Dir. says good chance Cannon could go down)
National Journal: The Hotline ^ | 27 June 2006

Posted on 06/27/2006 11:37:28 AM PDT by Spiff

House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 Some quotes to illustrate the importance of this race.

"There is a very good chance that he could go down," Jeff Hartley, executive director of the Utah Republican Party, tells First Read. "You wouldn't have the involvement from the White House if he weren't in jeopardy." (NBC News)

Consultant LeVarr Webb: "A low turnout is expected, so be one of the few who make a difference and have a voice." (Utah Policy Daily) )

UT GOP Chair Joe Cannon "says he's trying to stay neutral" in his brother's UT 03 primary, "but it didn't come across that way" in his online comments about challenger/alleged Satan victim John Jacob (Salt Lake Tribune).

A poll published over the weekend by the Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV, conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, found Cannon ahead — 46-33 percent among registered voters in the 3rd District. But 18 percent of voters remained undecided. "That's one of the highest 'undecideds' numbers I've seen so close to a primary election," said Jones, who has polled in Utah for more than 30 years. (Deseret News)

Jacob backtracks on his "Satan" comments: "What the [Salt Lake Tribune] reported and what I said weren't the same thing. It wasn't that [the devil] was trying to keep me out of Washington. I was just saying when you're trying to get into politics, there's a lot of adversity. … Contrary to reports of saying it was keeping me from being there, it was going to help me in training when I get there. It's not the devil; it's adversity." (Utah Policy Daily)

If the anti immigration lobby which has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Cannon for 4 years doesn't get Cannon this time and Cannon wins then this cannot be spun bythose forces as anything but a defeat for their cause. This is the first real race where is a battle of ideas among the Republicans. This race will be far more of an indicator than Bilray race was

Jacobs had a lot of help from outside groups running radio ads in a high decible campaign and is facing one opponent as opposed to 2 in '04. It doesn't surprise me that his vote percentage will likely be down some over 04.

Jacob also had to finance his own campaign while Cannon was given hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-immigration groups.

Even now very conservative Mike Pence is finding how to be the target of them.

It shows how insane these Mexiphobes are. Mike Pence's plan is actually very tough, but recognizes our economy cannot thrive merely on domestic labor alone. Or do the Mexiphobes want to pick fruit and clean hotel room toilets.

"If the anti immigration lobby which has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Cannon for 4 years..."

For one, it's been two years. He is a representative, not president.

Two, show me anything against Cannon in 2005, especially early 2005. This stuff got started mostly after Jacob's surprising showing at the convention beating Cannon 52-48.

They've spent $50,000.

How much is a Presidential endorsement worth? Free use of his voice in radio ads and phone recordings? Hundreds of Thousands of dollar? Millions? Priceless?

That doesn't include the massive cash infusion from the pro-illegal alien lobby that Cannon has been receiving in this bellweather election.

Maybe they could spare a few dollars to help you buy a clue.

"Jacob also had to finance his own campaign while Cannon was given hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-immigration groups."

That wasn't really my point. My point was I won't be surprised if Cannon's vote total is down over 04 because of the national attention given this race and the in kind contributions of soft dollar money ads on Jacobs' behalf.

By the way, looking at your Freeper name, you do realize Reagan was very pro-immigration don't you?? Would you guys have been targetting Reagan for primary defeat too?? Cannon is pretty much right in step with Reagan's thinking on immigration and guest worker plans, like it or not. I have the quotes to prove it if you like.

One newspaper is saying $136,000. As opposed to Team America's $40,500.

$40,500 that could have been used against RINO Chris Shays.

Oh that's right tancredo/bay buchanan have a fetish of campigning against 100% ACU congressman such as Chris Cannon, bevermind.

Probably the one policy where Reagan was flawed. His amnesty gave us the nightmare we have today.

We should have rounded up all the illegals back then shipped them out and built the wall, we didn't and the problem is ten times worse today.

If the anti immigration lobby

Wrong. The anti-ILLEGAL-immigration lobby.

Boy, listen for the sounds of crickets from the Mexiphobe crowd on FR.

Wrong. The anti-illegal-immigration crowd on FR.

Why do y'all insist on distorting the debate? To disguise that you are calling for rewarding lawbreakers?
