Pedro (Martinez) fires away (Mets vs Red Sox live thread)
The Boston Globe ^ | June 27, 2006 | By Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff

Just like when he was in Boston as a player, Pedro Martinez played to the crowd in a more than 22-minute pre-game session with the press before tonight's Sox-Mets game.

He opened the press conference by looking at the gaggle of media members and saying, "Oh, wow! Did I get traded?"

As close as Pedro came to taking a shot at the Red Sox was when he said he wished that principal owner John Henry and CEO Larry Lucchino were sitting beside him, so he could tell them that he was right.

"I wish [Henry] was here right now, so I could look at him and say to him that I got four years," said Martinez. "Lucchino. I wish Lucchino was right here. I could tell Lucchino again like I did before when I tilted my glasses down and tell him that I got four years and he goes, 'No, bull [expletive deleted].' I told him I got four years, after that they were leaving for the Winter Meetings, so now you know how much time they had to work it out. I remember John Henry saying, 'I don't care how many years you got. Just get it done.' Those were his exact words."

Why didn't the sides work it out? Pedro believes he's partly to blame for publically expressing his desire to stay in Boston.

"I was stupid enough to say that I fell in love with Boston and that I didn't want to leave," he said. "They could tell that I was sensitive about it and I was flexible that way.

Red Sox lead 5-2, bottom of the 4th! Sorry guys... any other day I'd be rooting for the Mets (in the NL), but not for the next three nights!

Maybe it's me, but this Lester kid seems to be throwing a lot harder than 85, 87 mph.

I keep hearing a chant of "Let's Go Mets!" cropping up in the distance at Fenway. Clemenza, why do I have this sneaking suspicion that YOU started it? ;-D

The Monster is tough to play and the wind is rough tonight. He looks like he is going to be a good one.

I have to be honest and say I haven't really noticed. I'm watching the game on NESN (New England Sports Network)... I'll try to take notice. That last pitch a minute ago (his 95th) was 88 mph.

He's sneaky fast. He can throw 94 then dial it down to mid-70's for his curve. I think when he gets his control and his poise down he is going to be really good.

He was considered untradable by the Sox.

I like lastings a lot, but he needs to go down when Floyd's ready, and get it together for September.

I am AT Fenway as we speak. My pocket PC/blackberry functions here! Can't say much, other than I am a bit nervous about tonight.

I haven't seen the gun on every pitch, but especially in the 1st-2nd, every time he'd throw hard, I'd look ane it was like "88"

Oh reyes, what the Hell did you do!!!!

WHOA... this is a first! A live on-the-scene post to me on FR.

Kewl... what section are you in? I know most of Fenway like the back of my hand. Isn't it beautiful?

I'm nervous about the Mets-Red Sox series as well. The Mets are a formidible team...

I like Reyes... my husband and I have followed his career since he was with the Norfolk Tides a few years ago. We went to the Tides ballpark a couple of times when Reyes was on the team... he really stuck out - it was hard not to notice his talent.
