No the before the Utah primary the House leadership was scared to death of Tancredo. When Cannon won they realized that Tancredo is a paper tiger. They are now ready to pass legislation and Pence has the best plan. Pence is now carrying the immigration issue flag.
Perhaps. I have no doubt that Bush would give amnesty to all the illegals if it were just up to him.
But I think that Bush and the rest of the Washington elite are figuring out that the voters aren't going to put up with amnesty. Maybe all those bricks are sending a message.
I find this article to be very encouraging as it suggests to me that grass-roots democracy still works, as it did for the anti-tax movement in the early 1970s (culminating in the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.)
It also looks to me as if the pro-enforcement crowd has the momentum. The Bush Administration has already backtracked to the Pence bill (as evidenced by this obviously planted story in NYT). Next stop may be a true enforcement-only bill.
