May be using the Pence plan to game us. Sorry, but after hearing the WH claim "it's not amnesty" I'm leery.

No the before the Utah primary the House leadership was scared to death of Tancredo. When Cannon won they realized that Tancredo is a paper tiger. They are now ready to pass legislation and Pence has the best plan. Pence is now carrying the immigration issue flag.

Perhaps. I have no doubt that Bush would give amnesty to all the illegals if it were just up to him.

But I think that Bush and the rest of the Washington elite are figuring out that the voters aren't going to put up with amnesty. Maybe all those bricks are sending a message.

I find this article to be very encouraging as it suggests to me that grass-roots democracy still works, as it did for the anti-tax movement in the early 1970s (culminating in the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.)

It also looks to me as if the pro-enforcement crowd has the momentum. The Bush Administration has already backtracked to the Pence bill (as evidenced by this obviously planted story in NYT). Next stop may be a true enforcement-only bill.
